The Smashing Machine

"The Smashing Machine", which follows mixed martial arts competitor Mark Kerr's career from late '99 until the Pride Grand Prix 2000 tournament in Japan, is a stunning and provocative look at a man whose fights with his own personal demons rival those he encounters in the ring (or in the octagon). Also featured in the documentary is Mark Coleman, who at the time was coming off a two-year slump in the sport.

Mad M (jp) wrote: Awful. Couldn't bare more than 20 minutes, Choppy dialogue and terribly choppy story-telling.

James B (fr) wrote: This was an alright movie. A feel good movie that is great for a family afternoon movie night. Not great, but not bad.

carol k (mx) wrote: This movie is very sobering . . . if I thought I was safe from Lyme Disease it left no stone unturned that Lyme is an epidemic not just headed our way but already here. I was amazed a how much suffering these people had to endure before getting a correct diagnoses. Being misdiagnosed with so many diseases ranging from MS, Parkinson's, Lupus, Alzheimers to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue was frightening, especially when they could actually get well with treatment for Lyme. How the Government treated the doctors and insurance companies treated patients was unbelievable and outrageous. It shows what I always suspected, things aren't always what they seem with our Government.

Vet C (kr) wrote: Acting was horrible! With the right director and actors this could have been a somewhat decent film - a waste of an hour and a half.

Carlos M (us) wrote: It is not only an endurance test to stay in the company of such a detestable character and his detestable family, but the movie is also a sentimental pile of clichs from the first scene to the last - including that unnecessary, ridiculously corny last scene during the end credits.

Panta O (nl) wrote: is carefully emotionally balanced Taiwanese film nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festivalis. The director of this wonderfully executed story triptich is Hou Hsiao-Hsien. Featuring three chronologically separate stories of love between May and Chen, which he sets in 1911, 1966 and 2005, using the same lead actors, very talented and charming Shu Qi and Chang Chen, we are introduced to three varieties of love: unfulfilled, mercenary, meaningless. The best part of this art work is the photography which was done with such visual beauty "that watching the movie is like holding your breath so the butterfly won't stir" (that was form the Chicago Sun critic)! Even the famous Jim Jarmusch said that "Hou Hsiao-Hsien is not only the crowning jewel of contemporary Taiwanese cinema, but an international treasure" and for him "His films are... among the most inspiring of the past thirty years, and his grace and subtlety as a filmmaker remain unrivaled." I agree to a degree!

Campbell P (nl) wrote: Midnight Run was a very heartwarming, rough, funny film all in one! I have to say I did not expect this film to be as good as I thought it was. This movie had everything! It had great performances by DeNiro and Grodin whom stood out the most to me. It was really funny actually, it's hard to blend an action movie with a comedy sometimes but this film did it perfectly. There was really great action sequences which were really fun and enjoyable to watch. The warmth as far as it goes really came through and had just enough to keep a viewer satisfied. There were tons and tons of great things about this movie! I couldn't really find anything bad about it. The research value of Midnight Run is very high. A

Victoria F (gb) wrote: AWESOME film set in London in 1971. One of the first movies I think to portray homosexuality so frankly and as such was controversial for the time. SBS stars the ever watchable Glenda Jackson as a career woman who shares her young, male, artist lover (Murray Head) with an older gay doctor (Peter Finch). Both Jackson and Finch are aware of each other and seemingly content to go along with the situation - just happy to get what they can. Their whole set-up seems to be a hang over from the 60's 'free love' ideal. The film deals with the nature of love and what some people will put up with in relationships just to avoid loneliness. There are some genuinely shocking and funny moments and Jackson's performance is as usual, stunning.

Irene M (br) wrote: ugh this was terrible. I'd never seen the original opera Carmen, and this was based on it. However the characters were so inconsistent and didn't make any logical sense. Painful to watch til the end.
