Wes I (fr) wrote: While it really doesn't offer anything experienced viewers haven't seen or heard before, it does offer a viewpoint from someone born into a world not of her making. And she being different from her "normal" human counterparts makes for compelling viewing...will she continue being helpful to those protecting her or will she revert to her "natural" state. The Girl throws us right into the midst of an England (and perhaps the world) being over-run with (surprise, surprise) a zombie-epidemic. This one resulted from an over-enthusiastic fungus. How it all started is never explained. How things fell apart so quickly probably didn't need explaining.Glenn Close plays the stock Researcher looking for a cure in "Second Generation" children (those born to uninfected Mothers but their babies did have "Bite-y" symptoms.) Arterton plays an Instructor who's tasked to teach the children (who all show signs of superior intelligence) but is against the research in principal, believing the kids to be more human than they appear. Considine plays the Sgt. trying to keep order in a deteriorating world. His character is the most varied and interesting of the adults shown; gruff and grim at first, he warms up to us over time so that his part becomes more sympathetic over time, especially near the finale when his "secret hurt" is revealed.Nanua is suited well to the challenging lead; bright-eyed and curious and polite to a fault. But not afraid to bare her chops when danger or the "need to feed" strikes. Hopefully she will land equally solid roles in the future, and this film won't be all she's remembered for.Well-crafted thriller...doesn't waste time with a lot of chases or "wall breeches," in fact it's at its most suspenseful when all's quiet and still. For that, I give it high marks. Perhaps just a tad longer than necessary, a bit too familiar in places...and the finale is a bit tough to swallow. If you're curious at all, it will be worth your time to watch. Love how they created the "abandoned city" look to, according to Wikipedia.

Henry B (kr) wrote: A good film that has high octane action throughout that is ruined by a hasty and badly thought out conclusion. Seriously, the ending leaves you wondering why you actually watched the film in the first place.

Larry W (br) wrote: A great concept is ruined by villians that make no sense.

Nominated for best foreign film (see my 4 lists o films (by year) nominated for best foreign film Oscar) A deeply moving Swedish Drama (or Romantic drama or foreign drama) This is a very fine character study of a lonely farmer age 40 who looks for a housekeeper. He has a younger male friend also. Oloff (Rolf Lassgrd) has farm in a very rural area of Sweden (setting 1960s) This film explores friendship love and even a dark undercurrent of erotic sexuality. The film is very overtly sentimental and so beautifully done. ( from the HE Bates short story.) The film has a depth of emotion seldom found in American films. Rolf Lassgrd plays a character who lives and exists with natural goodness and humanism but he is lonely and cannot read and young friend might be taking advantage of him. It did not win best foreign film of 1998 "life is Beautiful" did win. This is really an exceptional film--an up close character study It moved me greatly on the big screen and also at home Au 24 09. highly recommended. I watched with English subtitles I saw it also with the English audio track very good in this manner also. highest recommendation five stars

Syed R (kr) wrote: It's a competent slasher film that needed a little bit more slashing. Tom Atkins and Bruce Campbell were great, I wish we got more time between the two. Overall, it's pretty decent.

Steve G (ag) wrote: Basically, the storyline of every 60s movie, regardless of portrayed period. Libertines are cool. Pious people are not. The former have a special ability to feel that those bound by social decorum do not. Things that are base are heralded, & things that are elevated are trampled. Deviancy is no big deal. It's all harmless. All these counter-cultural movies portray the disreputable as the pinnacle of humanity, & the reputable as worthless & stuffy objects of contempt. They're all just such cute, clever, & lovable miscreants. Wiley little rascals! How can we then question what they do? I know it was presented in such a way where the audience was supposed to find him just irresistibly endearing...he annoyed me greatly. It is not without achievement. The direction was superb, at times. Finney is very good. Many of the performers are. The mode of story-telling is quite unique & interesting. I did enjoy the hunting scene, but the direction in that scene was a little spastic. More bad. I'm not sure if this film is the origination of the idea that a couple acting like retards was the universal sign of falling in love. The eating scene disgusted me one several levels. And the fact that the beautiful Miss Western would still be so unquestioningly & blindly given over to Tom Jones, despite anything he did whatsoever (multiple elicit affairs) is an insult to my intelligence & her character. She just always takes him back, & we're supposed to believe her to be a great lady. He's continually referred to as our hero. Speak for yourself. Not mine.Lesson: if you're related to the right people, you can get the girl.

Codie E (ag) wrote: Federico Fellini's crime drama looks to explore some of the complex morality behind small time criminals, putting in good backstories to Broderick Crawford and Richard Basehart's hoods and manages to match the style of the film to the story and themes explored.
