Johnny T (kr) wrote: A schlocky and charmless horror film with demonic overtones, Friend Request doesn't have the wit to develop what might have been an interesting idea. It's slickly made but shoddily scripted, with sub-reality TV dialogue ("This chick is just damaged") and a range of unengaged, soapy performances. While social media is increasingly coming under the microscope for engendering insecurity among young people, cinema is yet to deliver a truly chilling meditation on its insidious impact. All in all, there really isn't anything new in this film. Rather, it's a very standard horror film which attempts to be modern by incorporating social media deeply into its lack-of-plot. CGI wasps and coloured contact lenses aren't as terrifying as director Simon Verhoeven seems to think, and all the loud bangs in the world can't hide the lack of tension. Although there are some fun jolts and gruesome shocks to be had, Friend Request struggles to find anything new to say, feeling instead like something you'd half-remembered from a decade ago. The dread this could engender is not too strong and although there is some gore, it is not horribly horror-ific and is probably best suited to teen horror newbies. Genre aficionados might find it rather tame. Friend Request is a thoroughly unpleasant and somewhat laughable horror movie with a warning to young folks at its core: be careful whom you friend on Facebook.VERDICT: "Not So Hot" - [Negative Reaction] These films are truly terrible films. They are not the worst things ever made, but they are definitely awful and should not be seen by anyone. (Films that are rated 1.5 or 2 stars)

Nalina M (gb) wrote: Got this one off netflix...retelling of Hansel and Gretel....sounded very Pan's Labyrinth. I was hoping for something fun and weird for late-night viewing over the holiday weekend. Something Anna and I could giggle over. This was something wholly different, particularly since I wound up seeing it in the middle of the afternoon. On the other hand, that may have been for the best since it was fairly tedious. Late-night viewing may have put me to sleep. Nothing in this movie made any sense; random doesn't even begin to cover it. It was just strange...strange and random..and not in a fun way either: in a WTF-will-this-movie-ever-end way. And of course, like all tedious, arty films, it had the obligatory nothing-has-been-resolved-we-don't-know-how-to-end-this-so-let's-just-end-it ending. sigh. So strange, so off-putting, such a waste of a good subject.

Stephen Z (ru) wrote: "The Master of Suspense" once again earns his nickname. "Strangers on a Train" is by far one of Alfred Hitchcock's most suspenseful thrillers. In and of itself a well-written film, what really sells this crazy story is Robert Walker's creepy, psychotic performance. This film would have been good without Walker, but it is exceptional because of Walker. His eerily calm manner and piercing eyes convey his character's lunacy brilliantly. And while Farley Granger's performance is dry, it is overshadowed by Walker and by this clever, twisting tale. "Strangers on a Train" is one of Hitchcock's best films, and for a man with such a celebrated career, that's saying something!
