Baurushan J (jp) wrote: This movie is a stupid untalented piece of wasteful unnecessary writing, directing and acting. The film starts of with people disappearing because shadows are taking them and why are they taking them?; obviously we don't know because it's never explained. so the next day when a journalist named Luke played by Anakin Skywalker himself, finds out that people have disappeared, he goes to a bar where a young orphan boy named James played by newcomer Jacob Latimore has lost both his parents. as they try to find survivors around the place where they find Rosemary played by Thandie Newton who is a single mother and lost her baby and Paul played by John Leguizamo who works in a movie theater who was the first in the movie to witness the disappearance of all the people. Apparently this movie tries to explain the plot of the story but it doesn't explain that so basically it tries to make it's plot complicated but it just ends up being bland, lazy and wasted. When you have too few or too many characters, you need to develop them (a lot) and make us care about them. Hayden Christensen still can't act, the new kid was annoying and Thandie Newton and John Leguizamo better find a better movie after this and the ending was also a kick in the balls: Two children, a boy and a girl are left behind to repopulate the world. It may sound like a good ending but it's too predictable and cliched. If this movie actually cared about what it was doing, it would have been a dark, satanic ghost story or at least a grim, bloody, hellish visual but no; this movie sucked badly overall as it has it's lazy writing, unnecessary directing and wasted acting. Vanishing On 7th Street gets a 1.4/10.

JC E (nl) wrote: Let's be honest here, I only saw this movie because I am transfixed by the sheer power of Jennifer Hudson (The Three Stooges). She's got some serious pipes. I saw the previews for this and I wanted to see it just for her. The story didn't look that appealing, nor did the presence of Forest Whittaker (Out of the Furnace), Angela Bassett (Olympus Has Fallen), Mary J. Blige (Rock of Ages), Tyrese Gibson (Fast Six), or newcomer Jacob Latimore. Hudson has some soul stirring moments, but nothing that really meshes into something memorable. In fact, that's kind of the jist of the whole movie - unmemorable. That's not to say that the performances aren't heartfelt - though, Whittaker's sermon/show seems quite awkward - nor is the music off-putting. But it just never really sticks with you. Maybe the stage version - upon which this film is based - is better. But there isn't one single theme that rings true, except maybe that of forgiveness. And the dream-like sequence with the modern take on the nativity story was just awkward. It's not the worst Christmas movie out there, but there are a lot better ones to sit through.
