Chris D (us) wrote: An under-rated gem of a movie, with so many famous Irish faces to watch. Filmed in Dublin and includes Colm Meaney, Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and many more. Eleven different stories and twelve main characters, intertwined to create an somewhat unusual film. A lot of scenes will shock, and others will amuse as the humour is very dark, and the romance very touching, the language is atrocious and most vulgar. I cannot find a reason why this did not do well on general release, but makes up for it by being nowadays a cult film which is well sort after.

Scott W (nl) wrote: You probably won't agree with my 5-star assessment of this one, but I don't care. When I was 16, I rented the single-film (2 hours 45 minutes) version of this from a Red Giraffe Video. I watched half of it and turned it off because it was just too slow. The next day, I didn't have anything better to do, and decided to finish it. That day, it became one of the first films to truly move me and turn my heart upside-down. I've seen it perhaps 6 or 7 times since then, but this is the first time I'd seen it in at least 3 or 4 years. This film deals with the nature of beauty, the nature of love, the nature of family, the nature of dreams, and the nature of addiction. It struck me so powerfully because I once loved a woman I didn't understand, and I once had trouble seperating my dreams from reality - making this a deeply personal experience. Do not make the mistake of watching the first half of the film for the plot. It is merely a character introduction of several (eventually) fascinating and three dimensional people. This time, for the first time, I was able to see the 4 1/2 hour version. It played much differently, with the character's motivations much less obtuse - and had me sympathizing with many of them in a new way. It is also much lighter than the shorter version, with more humor and music. If you hold a value for your dreams and hold inside you a propensity for addiction - let yourself be whisked away by this modern masterpiece.

A private detective, JJ Gittes (played by Jack Nicholson), is hired by a woman to investigate her husband, as she suspects he is having an affair. Her husband, Hollis Mulwray, is the chief water engineer for the city of Los Angeles. Soon after Gittes delivers the photos that seem to confirm her suspicions, he meets the real wife of the man. Intrigued, Gittes investigates further. Then Mr Mulwray turns up dead...A clever, slow-burning thriller from director Roman Polanski. Information is gained slowly, heightening the intrigue. Many red herrings, and detours. Nothing is obvious. To make things even more complex, there's not just one plotline in play...Very film noir like in its feel. You could easily see Humphrey Bogart as Gittes...Good work by Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in the leading roles. Good support from John Huston. Not perfect though. The movie loses momentum in the last third or so, focusing on a lesser plot and amplifying the detour by an extended wild goosechase. Ultimately this sub-plot is necessary, to an extent, but it needn't have had so much time devoted to it. Just when the movie was ready to kick up a gear, having idled along previously, it went sideways rather than forward.

Mesh B (br) wrote: Why the rating is so low?! Mercury Rising possessed many qualities that you don't get from any other action movies - good plot, cast and what an ending! Bruce Willis and Alec Baldwin shines, respectively, as both the good and bad guys. Although, Miko Hughes did good, his character doesn't justify an autistic kid by far and that's quite disappointing. Overall Mercury Rising is one of the best action movie I've ever seen!!8.2/10.
