Trevor S (es) wrote: One of the most visually stunning films ever created; the fact that it was shunned so much at the Oscars is a crime.

Steven V (us) wrote: Amy Carlson is the woman in charge of a bank's security system. Two dirty cops (played by the slightly washed-up duo of Judd Nelson and Thomas Ian Griffith) kidnap her daughter (played by Darcy Rose Byrnes) and a friend to force her to open the safety deposit box of one of her bank's clients and give to them its content. Meanwhile, an investigation about police corruption in the department is already underway. This derivative, think of it as a cross between Trapped and Don't Say A Word, thriller lingers too long on the anguish and fear of the desperate mother and the kidnapped daughter, which gives it a rather unpleasant taste. Still, the experienced director, Arthur Allan Seidelman, manages to get some suspense out of it in places, and Amy Carlson gives a very convincing performance, she offers more to the movie than the movie offers to her.

It has some very funny characters and the acting's decent. That said, it's just one of those millions of movies that are just there; not bad, but not too great.

Andreas O (nl) wrote: Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novel is translated into a modern tale - again. Initially, the movie has an interesting feel, and Dougray Scott is far from the worst I've seen in the lead role, but it soon falls into a slow, predictable trot. The final act of the film is an annoyingly cliched courtroom drama, which I believe was one of the worst story solutions imaginable. Could have been interesting, but turned out a forgettable experience.

Dann M (it) wrote: John Turturro writes, directs, and stars in the indie comedy Fading Gigolo. After receiving an unusual proposal, a financially struggling man gets talked into becoming a gigolo. Co-starring Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, and Vanessa Paradis, the casting is pretty good; as are their performances. Yet the story is rather pointless, and the characters aren't developed that much. There are some nice bits of comedy and a few poignant dramatic moments, but none of it's followed through on. Though Fading Gigolo tries to say something about human connection, the message is muddled and gets lost in the monotonous storytelling.
