Frederick M (ca) wrote: This was a pretty good documentary on the failure of the war in Afghanistan. It wasn't really in-depth and only touched on each issue briefly. There was also no mention of the natural gas pipeline. The financial costs for the US are also pretty bad but pale in comparison to how the Afghans have paid for this war. A little more focus could have made this documentary as good "No End in Sight" was.

John M (mx) wrote: Paul Newman's hit piece on the press is pretty see-through in its intent. All because Newman had issues about people printing stories about him. So, what follows is a one-sided story about an incompetent reporter (Sally Field) and the press apparatus recklessly tearing into an innocent man (Paul Newman).Since the movie is as one-sided as it is, you would hope for some style from the script, but it's instead just plodding and without any style whatsoever. Field, who's shown herself as highly competent in films like "Norma Rae" inexplicably plays a complete ditz here. Newman just plays his stock Newman character. The way the story unfolds is clunky and unfocused. Throwing in a lot of mafia dealings, lots of unnecessary melodrama, and a kinda-sorta romance between the mismatched Newman and Field makes the movie thoroughly unwieldy.I've never been a fan of Dave Grusin's film scores, so his over-the-top music here again proves to be too much. Owen Roizman is a very good cinematographer, but his work can't help the movie with its issues.Sydney Pollack was always a director who was certainly the lesser of his contemporaries. Easily proving this is how much better a job Sidney Lumet did with Newman the next year with "The Verdict." And, it didn't hurt that Lumet had the great David Mamet writing the script.

Robt B (fr) wrote: Spencer Tracy stars in this classic film produced in 1954. Other stars in the film are Robert Ryan, Anne Francis,Walter Brennan,Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin. A true morality play in which evil exposes itself in the presence of good. The barren setting and the sparse dialog create a dramatic tension of the story. Even the fact that this was shot in B&W adds to the moral conflict of the drama. An evil act has been cloaked in collective silence, which has created suspicion and hostility to outsiders. Tracy arrives on the train, which rarely stops at this isolated town, and his very presence begins the unraveling of the crime.

Gina S (au) wrote: The acting was cringeworthy. Particularly Nicolas Cage. The end point of the movie was good & true, but it could have been done so much better. To make the war lord a wise sage with proverbial sayings is a stretch.

Ted W (br) wrote: This is a glorious mess of a movie! Uncredited performances by Pesci, Dylan and much more, over the top in all respects. Hopper must have been completely insane when he made this.
