The Tin Drum
Oskar Matzerath, son of a local dealer, is a most unusual boy. Equipped with full intellect right from his birth he decides at his third birthday not to grow up as he sees the crazy world around him at the eve of World War II. So he refuses the society and his tin drum symbolizes his protest against the middle-class mentality of his family and neighborhood, which stand for all passive people in Nazi Germany at that time. However, (almost) nobody listens to him, so the catastrophe goes on...

(es) wrote: This was suppose to be a horror film. I didn't jump once. I kept waiting for something, anything but got nothing. You could tell it was a budge film by the fact that there were only four actors... They played both themselves and other people. Her flashbacks were keys to her lost memories. Lost memories that should have stayed lost...

Fate brings two diversely different women together, and sets them on a collision course that will shatter their preconceived notions about love, life and the power of one's soul. The film starts with Tyler (Sam Harris) a filmmaker turned self-styled love guru who, over the course of the film shares his many theories, chiefly being that everyone has their "twin flame" " a soulmate; He defines the process of these two souls meeting as soulemmetry. The lovers in question are Elena (played by Necar Zadegan), a shy pastor's wife, who stays at husband Barry's (played by Gary Weeks) side out of duty, and Peyton (an impressive Traci Dinwiddie), a successful writer, grieving after the death of her mother and trying to get her life back on track after a bad break-up. Her life begins to change and she gradually breaks out of her tight confines. Over time, the two women grow closer and embark on an affair, unable to deny their feelings any longer. Very good acting, a lovely romance, and overal good storyline with a surprising ending makes this an enjoyable, pleasant, relaxing film to watch, to ponder, to enjoy. After Desert Hearts, this one is my second favorite! Available on instant download from Netflix but I will buy it; its that good! Highly recommended!!
(gb) wrote: Easily the smartest film of the whole series, Deathly Hallows - Part 1 juggles many different plot strands with ease whilst finding time to focus on the toll the emotional journey has taken on the main characters as well as foreshadowing the oncoming threat that the biggest fight is yet to come. The performances of all three leads are stellar and easily their standout movies.Fans of Radcliffe, Watson and Grint will be pleased that these actors are given a chance to show what they're really made of. In short, this film is an emotional, beautiful film that sets up the finale to come very well.

(jp) wrote: Dull, tedious, overlong, and just a mediocre war epic overall. And to think that it beat Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas for the best picture Oscar back in 1990, by first time director Kevin Costner, no less (talk about adding insult to injury). On top of that, the film's story has been done much better in other films, most notably in The Last Samurai.

(br) wrote: A pretty decent film for the time but there's a lot of things holding it back. The narrator is kind of annoying, the dialogue is very wooden (Pidgeon's lines especially), and it would have done the movie a great service to show how Curie slowly died of radiation sickness. That could easily have been a half hour. Still, Greer Garson's acting is very good. Not sure how historically or scientifically accurate it is, but it's worth at least one watch.
