(us) wrote: Thanks to a blend of sci-fi inspiration, horrifying gore, fanatical extra-terrestrials, comedic slang, council estate backdrops and its coming of age characters, a cult classic was born. Joe Cornish??s Attack the Block is a detonation of all the predatory alien invader films we??ve come to remember, but with the fusion of South London culture interweaved throughout, not to mention the sole location of Wyndham Tower, this film becomes too unique to pass. Its London council house setting feels a bit like The Raid, another film set almost entirely in a tower block, and it seems these high-rises make for intensely confined action spectacles that are allowed to use doors and corridors like it??s the fricking sequel to The Adjustment Bureau. Attack the Block can quite simply be described as an action-packed survival quest through a symbol of London??s at its most grittiest. Due to the constant movement, Attack the Block doesn??t let you breath at times because you??ve got these gorilla aliens all over the place zipping up walls and jumping from floor to ceiling. They are unrelenting vicious psychos that cease to be scary after the opening meteorite surprise. They need to, or have to, be far more terrifying than what they are, smarter and perhaps slightly less vicious in their tactics because to us they appear merely as hungry animals that don??t think and just chase. And seeing as the film opts for dumbass aliens, comedy should have been injected heavily into Attack the Block. There are simply too many gory and gruesome fatalities that Attack the Block loses the spark of interest we had in its extra-terrestrials, who merely bully the characters into being scared shitless. But not John Boyega, who left this film unscathed, and remains an enigma throughout thanks to his hooded attire giving him that eerie yet powerful inner mysteriousness the alien??s needed. But with the passion and desire it has shown on a small council-house level as opposed to Hollywood??s lofty ambitions, Attack the Block has come kicking with more life in it than most Hollywood creations. The Verdict: Attack the Block is a wild and hectic action film whose appetite for death and urban vibrancy on a small scale gives the film oomph to work on an action-spectacle scale. ???????????????????? 7/10

Never given it much thought, it was insightful and illuminating on a life so different than one here in North America and perhaps a more fullfilling one with very hard work, not great weather (to us lol) and a more family time with THE ENTIRE FAMILY . . . and camels! :)

This one's meaning can be easily said with one of the last lines. Ultimately it doesn't matter where you end up, its who you end up with that matters. You can go to the moon, and only find sand.

(kr) wrote: A cool variation of a zombie movie with a great idea that was neatly executed. It's more than a typical and under produced genre film and is a good time.

(br) wrote: This a really intelligent look post war Japan, where outcasts and the poor meet to live out their impoverished lives hustling to anyone, gangster or even stationed American soldiers. It's incredibly stylistic and has some of the best set designs I've seen for pre-Roman Pink (this was made by Nikkatsu studios) b-movie. As fun and silly as it all seems there's an undertone of social critique. This period of time has been discussed a lot in Japanese cinema from the 60's to 70's and so far I've only seen negative interpretations of this time. If you don't find any insights at least it will be exciting and colorful.
