Michael M (au) wrote: I am not a brony, but a friend and I watched this documentary in an attempt to find an answer to the simple question "why?" Well, we got one. The fandom, while I'm not a part of it, is actually quite a fascinating thing to witness. I may not be interested in the show myself, but I now understand why others might be. I also now see just how much they like it, and how much of an impact it has had on the personal lives of millions. It's a very well-constructed documentary with a variety of personalities and a brisk pace. It also makes some interesting film choices, including having animated segments with a pony professor explaining things. I don't usually think of documentaries as fun, but this one was very fun.
Ingela A (ca) wrote: This film is full of suspense, tragedy, and irony. With the focus on excellent acting and directing, rather than special effects and music, this movie incites the viewer to ponder its messages long after the last credits. Raising issues related to the importance of parenting, the frustration of hoping when the system is against you, and the role administrators play in keeping the accused, even when rehabilitation is imminent, in prison.
Angie C (fr) wrote: If you are going to make a a two and half hour movie about twelve men sitting in a room, they had better have damn fine performances...and they are. This film did not help my love affair with Russia at all...I think I just went from girly crush to full blown romantic love...No one tells a story (or in this case, a lot of stories) like Russians...
Bengel W (gb) wrote: Although the photography is beautiful and stylistically lit it tends to be rather studio in look, somewhat spoiling the overall appearance of the film. The acting is rather shallow and does not give the characters any depth. The story is flimsy at best and gives the franchise a weak ending as the laziness seeps in. Nibbles: Chocolate Digestives and milk.

I found the foul mouthed approach to the film didn't really work in Woody's favor I found him really unlikeable. The side stories happened so fast in this film & you had to catch up so to speak. I guess it had some clever scenes but it was more in your face than I thought necessary. Many critics have said Woody's late 90's work was his decline although I don't find that comment entirely fair this was a weaker film in his varied works.

Bob V (au) wrote: A camp film with a familiar sounding plot about a talented yet poor dancer who has to demean herself in a burlesque show to pay the bills, whilst competing for love, and yadda yadda yadda... Although Maureen O'Hara is the leading role as the long-suffering (and in my opinion annoyingly simpering) ballerina, it is Lucille Ball who pretty much walks away with the film. Ball at this point was still trying to escape the B-pictures mold Hollywood had forced her in, but every so often she did get a good one, be it often as a secondary character, and this is definitely one of them. Ball would, of course, give up on Hollywood eventually and go see what television was all about, with a career as the Queen of Television spanning several decades as the result. A further result was also that she eventually became the owner of RKO, the studio that made this film. Good on her. One of Old Hollywood's few high-profile female directors, Dorothy Azner does attempt to deliver a message that was rather novel in its day, by having her ballerina shame the crowd at the burlesque house, and making a statement about female empowerment. Perhaps therefore it's ironic that Lucille Ball's anti-thesis to this message is actually the most memorable character.

Chantel B (ag) wrote: i enjoyed the overall message. the struggles of growing up, wanting to do what you want but being under the power/influence of others, then finally coming into your own, having/using your own voice.
Bryan W (ca) wrote: i just watched this in its entirety for the first time, and it's just as good as i thought after my initial, partial-viewing from about a year ago. the initial 5-10 minutes are quite laughable, as it takes all of 45 seconds for elvis to break into song...but after the initial frivolity, it's good stuff. the acting is a little bit over the top, but it's well done. the violence is pretty violent, and elvis has some quality action sequences. good stuff all around, and while the ending is kind of abrupt, it's palatable. this is quite a good western, and not just another elvis novelty movie.
Kenny N (ag) wrote: No stars. I hate this movie. I've seen it several times due to watching it with RiffTrax audio commentary, and each time I see it I find more to hate. And yet everyone else seems to love and praise it as some groundbreaking achievement in horror. This rinky dink production ended up grossing millions at the box office. And that confounds me, because we have more found footage horror movies than we know what to do with. Surely we could have found a better one to throw our hard earned money at in theaters. ("Alone With Her," for starters.) The leads are obnoxious and unlikable. I'd call them "amateurish," but that's kind of the point in the "found footage" genre of filmmaking. But this thing doesn't scare me at all. I figured out this thing in 10 minutes, and the movie does nothing to make getting there half the fun. So I gladly give it no stars. I won't bother with the sequels because I doubt they'd impress me any better than the original.
