It doesn't flaunt name-only sequel tradition in having much of a point outside of cashing in on an established brand but it's not terrible either, providing a broadly similar tale, albeit with a noticable drop in budget and a new location - the palm trees and sunshine of L.A. giving way to the strip clubs and muscle cars of Detroit. Nothing special but watchable. Ray Liotta is the big name in the cast but as befitting a guy firmly entrenched in the Lance Henriksen "I'll do anything for a buck" stage of his career who can play these characters in his sleep, he's pretty much phoning it in. Shawn Hatosy plays the token rookie partner and while he's decent, he doesn't leave much of an impression. The most memorable thing about him is his odd habit of being sweaty and out of breath all the time!

One morning, he wakes up still wearing his clothes from the night before and covered with blood; seemingly unaware of what happened, he cleans himself up, changes his clothes and leaves for work. As the day wears on, the terrible events of the previous day gradually fade into his memory, and he comes to the realization that he committed a heinous crime. As Krister wrestles with his conscience about what to do, he becomes increasingly aware that the life he knew is over, and a strange and uncertain new chapter has begun. As Krister ponders his options, he is particularly troubled about what may become of his son.Jesper Ganslandt's "Apan" is yet another good example of a movie made in a simple manner, but due to strong direction and strong acting it becomes a hit in the gut. We see the consequences of a crime and the irrational behaviour from the main character Krister in a very intense way. Ganslandt takes us for a ride and we are not sure how it will end during the ride. Apparently Olle Sarri, who plays the main character, was not allowed to read the script before filming. The movie was shot in chronological order, with Sarri coming to the set every day without having the slightest idea what was going to happen. Also, everyone in the film team was instructed not to talk to Sarri, isolating him from the crew, making sure that nobody gave away hints about the story. This has most likely added to the strong performance. Olle Sarri has more or less just done comedy in one way or another before and is known for that in Sweden, thus this is something of a break away from that genre. I liked "Apan". Solid.

(us) wrote: A good movie. It gets the extra half star because of the ending. Was a very pleasing one. So cop falls in love with woman who "accidentally" kills her husband, he helps her cover it up, suspense ensues. Sound familiar? Probably becuase it sounds like almost every film noir ever made. Which is far from a bad thing. Del Toro and Harris are good, if not outstanding leads but Madeline Stowe effectively pulls off the "is she or isn't she?" thing very well. Pity Charles Dance is wasted (pun intended), not to mention he does a hammy southern US accent. Soon enough Harris's world comes crashing down around him for helping her, after all nothing is ever simple, but the movie really comes into it's own in the last twenty minutes. Cue twist i didn't see coming and cool ending. If you're scared of venturing off into Noir-land cos you hate black and white film or really dated movies, ease yourself in with the likes of this and LA Confidential. Definitely worth a watch.

(fr) wrote: Although being a prequel concerning events that happened just before 'Zulu', 'Zulu Dawn' is a completely different picture. Whilst 'Zulu' dealt with heroic acts (in an almost hopeless situation), 'Zulu Dawn' focuses on the pomp of the British Empire and ill-advised tactics, employed by the British army. This awful military blunder saw 1,300 British massacred by 20,000 Zulu warriors. Despite having Burt Lancaster and Peter O'Toole, something seems to be missing, though it's hard to pin down exactly what. The start is fairly ponderous, though you certainly get to learn a lot more about the Zulu wars as a whole.

(fr) wrote: Maybe I'm getting soft but this movie really snuck up on me and was a total treat! Yet again Kurosawa never seizes to amaze me in showing his diversity and talents as a filmmaker. A very simple yet heartfelt story about two lovers who share imagination to cope with post war Japan and simply enjoy the love that they both have for each other and their country. A great ending leaves you wanting more!
