The Watermelon

The Watermelon

Newly divorced, Achilles Pumpkinseed lives alone in the house left to him by his deceased mother. Depressed and adrift, he spends his days smoking pot and watching television, usually alone but sometimes with his equally rootless friend Patroclus. One day an unexpected visitor named Homer shows up at Achilles' doorstep, bearing an unusual gift: an old dilapidated camping trailer painted like a child's image of a watermelon. Achilles' life will never be the same. Until it is. Sort of.

Andy T (mx) wrote: Midnight In Paris is charming, sweet, and comedic with the right timing, bringing the audience through an amazing fantasy with Woody Allen's brilliant script and masterful direction, as well as perhaps Owen Wilson's best performance on screen.

Jillian F (de) wrote: one of those different kind of movie directions.. LOVE that sh*t.

Gavin M (ag) wrote: One of Liotta's best! Very intelligent written and made movie, the end was definitely a surprise for me, and Liotta and Jason Patrick both give good performances in this cop thriller.

Lisa S (fr) wrote: i liked the whole movie, i even bought it! its a good story.

Jason M (it) wrote: Rushmore is a generous 4.5/5 stars. It is a unique "teen" comedy that is quite different from many in this genre. First timer Jason Schwartzman launched his career as the protagonist. Bill Murray plays a mundane, childish, industrialist and Olivia Williams their simple and charming love interest. The film has a few gut-bursting, hilarious scenes. The soundtrack is full of obscure 60s and 70s rock songs pieced together by the founder of Devo. This script is written so well that there are few, if any, periods where the film is trying to find itself. The film is constant flowing from one scene to the next, held tightly together by a great story and protagonist.High recommendation for people who are looking for a light-hearted comedy.

Ian B (gb) wrote: Over sixty years after its premiere, On the Waterfront still boils with a frenetic melancholy and intensity that is somehow greater than the sum of its impressive parts. Complex scenarios through simplistic dialogue, searing editing to dissonant music, and the pitch perfect performances and direction that have been hailed time and again remain just as strong and relevant, ready for the fight.

John T (us) wrote: Many compare this film to Charlotte Bronte's classic Jean Eyre, but with supernatural undertones in the form of the island natives strange belief in voodoo. This is the second successful collaboration between producer Val Lewton and director Jacques Tourneur released one year after the their slightly better "Cat People". The basic story revolves around voodoo in a Caribbean island and the effects it has on one particular family. The whole film provides a horror film's necessary elements of atmosphere and great cinematography, but there is no violence or gory scenes; just a lot of suspense, leaving a lot to the imagination. There is a constant pounding of faraway drums during the picture which increase in tempo and sound level to indicate impending doom. This film is not in the same genre as the classic film Night of the Living Dead or from The Walking Dead television series and anyone looking to see cadavers returned from the grave, meandering about looking for flesh to feast upon will be disappointed. These are traditional, mind-erased zombies, unfeeling, unthinking and unresponsive to anything. The two leading actors, Tom Conway as the family patriarch and Frances Dee as the nurse are both very good. Although Christine Gordon, as Jessica the voodoo stricken comatose wife, says not a word during the whole film, she manages to steal every scene she is in. The calypso singer, portrayed by Sir Lancelot, was hilarious in a dark humor sort of way when he sings about the family's history, spilling the beans for the audience. Edith Barrett was good as the mother who plays a rather surprising role at the end. There are several creepy sequences, most notable when Jessica mindlessly walks thought the sugar cane fields (hence the title of the film) to the place where voodoo worshippers gather. The following scene of a voodoo ritual was also memorable.I Walked With A Zombie is definitely worth a watch. I rate this movie as one of the Tourneur/Lewton best and highly recommend it to all lovers of the genre.

Haden P (fr) wrote: What a great movie! Movie really captures your focus with ease...there was just something about Newman's character that made you want to hang around and see what was going to happen. I think this is one of those Westerns you should watch even if you don't like Westerns.

David B (us) wrote: A bacterial infection threatens to kill off the first manned mission to Mars. Threadbare in all departments with a script a 7 year old could have brought more meaning to, this starts off quite brightly but within 5 minutes stumbles badly and never recovers. The script is appalling with lines that just made me raise my eyebrows. A waste of 1h30 mins of my life!
