Dommage car cette histoire d'ogive nucleaire tres noire merite mieux, tant Anthony Edwards est excellente et la musique de Tangerine Dream remarquablement bien adaptee. Une jolie surprise.

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul revolves around a romance between an elderly widow and an Arab foreign worker. It's filmed and set in Germany. Much like interracial marriages were looked at in the US it was frowned upon. The story is simplistic, the film never moves out of a realistic view point. While the ideas were depressing I never actually felt any emotion. I don't know why, the acting was genuine enough, and the story had me gripped. Even during the family meeting I didn't feel anything, emotionally I wasn't present. While I liked what the ending thirty minutes did, I don't think it was executed perfectly. It was to sudden, I wouldn't have minded an additional thirty minutes of footage to make it more evened out. This is still a phenomenal film considering how little it revolves around. Tension was always boiling, and the story had me gripped. You don't have to be adventurous to enjoy this, so I recommend it to everyone.3.5 stars+

With gorgeous cinematography, a perfect soundtrack, a tour de force ending, this film hit home with me. A fascinating and memorable experience. An underrated, misinterpreted, & misunderstood masterpiece.

Hatem A (ag) wrote: 2.0/4.0 It is always admirable when the Academy recognizes solid performances in average films but Elizabeth Taylor's performance in "BUtterfield 8", while good, is by no means Oscars material. Taylor plays Gloria, a Manhattan call girl/model who falls for rich but unhappily married Weston Leggitt (Laurence Harvey) and at the same time wants to become clean. Eddie Fisher, who Taylor married after the film (he was married to Debbie Reynolds at the time), plays her longtime childhood friend musician and main source of consolation Steve Carpenter. Their friendship is causing big troubles with his girlfriend (Susan Oliver in a brief role). One of the movie's main problems is that it needed to be more sexually daring but that would have warranted for it to be produced in a different time (the film was deemed controversial at the time). It might have been also more effective if the story were told solely from Gloria's perspective instead of getting a multitude of supporting characters. Only saving grace is that the supporting actors are uniformly good. The best supporting character here in my opinion is Mildred Dunnock as Gloria's mother and their relationship is possibly the most interesting one in the movie. There are hints of greatness in Taylor's performance especially in the scene where Gloria reveals everything to her friend Taylor. A main problem is that we get why Gloria ended up the way she is but nothing convincing on her desire to redeem herself. Directed by Daniel Mann and based on the 1939 novel by John O' Hara (it is reportedly significantly changed up from the book), the movie was infamous for Taylor and Fisher's panning of it at a time of the media frenzy surrounding their relationship and as Taylor was making a transition from MGM (which distributed the film) to 20th Century Fox. Well, the movie isn't bad to that extent but it is nonetheless flawed. Title refers to telephone agency where Taylor's character works. Won 1 Oscar: Actress (Taylor); Nominated for 1 Other: Cinematography.
John S (kr) wrote: Kirk Douglas is wonderful in this ??50s Western drama. Douglas plays Dempsey Rae, a free spirited cowhand looking to stay ahead of the taming of the west. Along the way he shows the ropes to a young tag-a-long played by William Campbell and gets into a mess over barbed wire. Overall this film is a fun, clich ridden romp to watch.
