(fr) wrote: An out-of-this-world anime film!I did appreciate it and felt well entertained while watching it on an airplane flight recently.I'm always amazed at the European/western elements anime films sometimes contain. This one is a take on the christmas story. The characters and the story is complex and meandering, like an improvisation, but it does all make sense in the end. What I did not like about the movie is the stereotyping of "the lowest of the low" which the three homeless people represent - the catholic "sinners in need of the mercy of forgiving".I am especially having problems with the effeminate homeless drag queen character. It seems to be inspired by "Spider Woman" but it's really quite an awful clichee that's spooled off here. But the film does have its share of great moments, great visual impressions of a wintery cityscape, enough epic plot twists and a warm heart after all. While it wasn't my favorite anime ever I was struck by its remarkable complexity and appreciated seeing it.

(mx) wrote: Although some of the actors appear to be trying -- the interactions between M. Cain and L. Gary are actually rather believable -- the film falters with a nigh-uncountable level of problems. Oddly, a simple recut could make the film better. And by that, I mean, remove the awful looking shark.

(br) wrote: Slow as molasses. I love DeNIro and Norton. They've been in many great films and acted together in one. The only reason this film was made was them.I liked Conroy as the neurotic mom in Six Feet Under. Stone is a slow, disjointed mess. It starts slow and ends horribly. The music drones on, lulling you to sleep. For once Netflix reviewers are right on. I was never really sure what was going on in this film. Everyone is a lost soul, part normal and part villain. Waste of a rental.
(it) wrote: Isabelle Blais est excellente.
(es) wrote: a fantastic performance by Gary Cooper, and an overall terrific war movie with about as much "feel-good patriotism" as WWII-era cinema can muster. a lot of elements are at work here, and they're all accomplished admirably....there's a bit of Western, a little action, a little romance, some American patriotism that does everything but tell you buy war bonds after the closing credits, and even a little pacifism and anti-war sentiment to balance it all out. if there are any flaws, the story does tend to drag in places, and some moments definitely feel forced....but in the end, this is still a wonderfully enjoyable film.

(ru) wrote: When I want to just sit and enjoy a movie this is one of the very few I can watch over and over.
(es) wrote: like all anthology films, there are good ones and there are bad ones. but i really liked the holiday theme. some of them are definitely inventive.
