A landmark of American independent film from 1978, The Whole Shootin’ Match is a rapturous rediscovery. Eagle Pennell’s first feature details the tragi-comic struggles of two small-time schemers, Loyd (Lou Perryman) and Frank (Sonny Carl Davis), desperate to land their big break. Through its anecdotal narrative and fresh, honest observation of its characters, the film intimately captures a time and place (Austin, Texas, 1977) with its atmospheric photography and rough-hewn charm, making it an inspiration for filmmakers everywhere since its release. No wonder this is the film that prompted Robert Redford to start the Sundance Institute. Missing in action for close to 25 years, Watchmaker Films is proud to present a complete restoration from the only known existing print of The Whole Shootin’ Match and a completely remastered soundtrack from the original stems. —Watchmaker Films . (br) wrote: The ridiculous level it goes to and plot holes it reaches are both probably through the roof. I choose to ignore logic and sense and just wait to see what happens in the end. That ending does make the effort mostly worthwhile, but then you realize how little sense it all makes.

Using lengthy shots filled with subtext, the film builds tension as the philandering husband nears, and eventually makes, his fateful decision. The key scene is an 11+ minute shot chronicling the aftermath of his choice, along with a wonderfully complex, expertly-acted, and heartbreaking final sequence.

There is lone gunslinger (the good guy even if he doesn't realize it), really bad guys, a beautiful strong woman, gun play, wide-screen cinamatic landscapes and all the other topes of the Western genre. Lightly layered on top are some smart observations on the meanings of honour and self and change. The comedy flows easily and naturally from the story and thankfully not through any belabored jokes or plot devices. In the end, he gets his girl and no one loses their hats.

He thinks he is the best in the world well I say he is not the best in the world. Now when he played in high school he may have been acting better than he is now I just hope he will not show off as much and be a good sport. And I don't like how they call him King James that's just what I think.
