(es) wrote: Unusually well-made for a Jim Sheridan movie. For once I didn't feel like I had to put up with his clunky direction and script while I was enjoying the amazing acting. Hugely compelling, energetic, fascinating and sympathetic. Though it has its problems (the bad guys are never real, just sneering villains, the final court scene is very Hollywood, and some sequences are very clumsily chopped down for time) they didn't really bother me too much in the end.
(gb) wrote: just watched this movie for the first time last night and hate to say it but as much as i wanted to like it b/c of john candy except for a few funny parts it is just not that good. i say pass on this one and watch some of his later work such as uncle buck or planes, trains, and automobiles b/c they are much much better than this.
(jp) wrote: [85/B+] This is a whimsical comedy about a couple of confidence men scamming women, and squaring off against each other, on the French Riviera. It's hard not to like a film that is so bare-faced trashy and mean-spirited at heart, and with such a winning cast. It's delightful to see Brando letting his guard down a little, playing the crude goofball flip-side to Niven's charming criminal aristocrat. He is a little hammy and sloppy at points, and obviously not as totally comfortable in his role as Niven is, but he does manage to be pretty hilarious through much of it. Many will know this story from its reincarnation as the darn funny Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, from 1988, which was a better directed (and definitely better funded) movie. Bedtime Story is equally as humorous and fun, if a little less tight and a little more technically clunky. It wraps up somewhat too abruptly, and leaves some of the characters in the lurch, but overall works very well.

(kr) wrote: This movie has a pacing to it - to be sure. But this is one of the first movies that I have ever seen to thoroughly track the transition of a human being turning in to another human being. Pilot in to Jesus. Rarely do you read a story of watch a film that can do such a thing with a character and make you see every little tick in that direction. There are millions and millions of little turning points and you see everything in this film. There is excellent acting, staging, humor, grief, and if the ending doesn't fuck you the hell up - you're crazy.
(it) wrote: This is a great movie for giving information and two sides of a story. However, it can get really boring. I think it could have benefitted from having a narrator instead of just going around to people's interviews. Does a good job of the telling a true story though.
