The Wiz

The Wiz

A Thanksgiving dinner brings a host of family together in a Harlem apartment, where a 24-year-old schoolteacher named Dorothy Gale (Diana Ross) lives with her Aunt Em (Theresa Merritt) and Uncle Henry (Stanley Greene). Extremely introverted, she has, as Aunt Em teases her, "never been south of 125th Street", and refuses to move out and on with her life.

An adaption of "The Wizard of Oz" that tries to capture the essence of the African American experience. Dorothy, a young African-American kindergarten teacher leaves a large family dinner one night to chase after her dog during a New York City snowstorm and gets swept up by a cyclone and transplanted to the urban version of the land of Oz. . Nicki B (it) wrote: It was ok. Not as funny as I thought it would be.

Serena G (nl) wrote: I really liked this film and then my critical side of watching movies came in. I spent part of the time relating to the girl and the other part trying to draw parallels with Twilight. First off, seeing when everyone is telling a lie (inadvertently reading another's mind, per say) and then finding someone who is immune to that power...Then having to choose between two people...blah blah blah, etc. Then, I realized this film was made prior to the Twilight film and probably before the intense blowout of Twi-hards... On top of that, many superheroes find a person with immunity and fall in love with them - this is even pointed out in the film itself. Kudos. It was an easy and fun watch, relate-able to the tenth degree, but still lacking a worthwhile point. I guess it's more of a coming of age film than anything else.

Zurino O (it) wrote: This one has one of the best supporting casts I've ever seen (as they relate to the main story line). Give that casting director a raise! AND directed by Joey Lauren Adams?? what?! nicely done.

Jonalyn B (nl) wrote: Would've loved to see this live. Some great musical performances in here.

Sarah N (nl) wrote: Half Bourne Identity, half Romanric Comedy. Cosmic story telling in the line of "Another Earth." How this gem was overlooked, I don't know - but glad to have randomly come across it on Netflix!

Josu C (br) wrote: This daring movie makes an unjustified murder an art.

Jesse S (de) wrote: Very low budget film & it showed in the quality of the story. It addresses a very serious issue regarding human trafficking, but still a bad movie.

Chris D (au) wrote: Sure-handed director John Irvin skillfully balances the mile-a-minute action with the deep-rooted dialogue amongst its complex characters, who by the way are wonderfully rendered by their actors...almost on par with 'Apocalypse Now.'

James O (jp) wrote: One of my favorites for the music and live animal scenes.
