Things We Do for Love
Vaarala, a reserved romantic photographer, has an odd artistic vision of loneliness: he takes serial photos of an empty park bench in remote spaces of nature. When he meets and falls in love with the spirited, unruly Ansa, his ‘bench’ is suddenly filled. But in order to be with her he has to not only overcome his own frailties, but also the impending danger of Ansa’s volatile ex-con ex, and then Ansa herself, a woman prone to impulsiveness and impetuousness.

The sensible grown up in me realises it was quite cliched & a bit cheesy, but the bit of my that just wanted to chill for an hour, be entertained & have a giggle enjoyed it. If you are the sort of person who takes themselves far too seriously & thinks you are a professional film critic - go flush yourself & leave this film alone. It's fun.

On one hand it was better than I expected thanks to its lead, whose stoic, yet very expressive, eyes remind me of Buster Keaton and its action sequences were topnotch, particularly the last shootout scene in the company office, which was intense thanks to its close-quarter setting and the fact that it looks like it was shot using a completely different lens also added to the more realistic look the scene had. At the same time, I really found the story of the film to be fairly uninteresting. There's this fine idea here of this killer going through this existential crisis as he starts to question his choices in life and his bloody past with the company he works for. The way they go about this is stereotypical, as he falls in love with the mother of one of his trainees. And this is really where the film falls apart. Perhaps fall apart isn't the right term, because it isn't like the film is a disaster, but I found these parts of the film lacking in any decent character development or acting. The characters are pretty one-dimensional and perhaps if the characters would've been more interesting, then I may have thought this was a good movie. I don't mean to say the acting from the supporting cast is bad, it's just that they don't really stand out and that is due to the fact that their characters are one-dimensional and have nothing interesting to say. Your lead's charisma and solid action sequences can only take you so far without a decent story to tell. This movie isn't bad at all, it's just lacking certain things that would've made it a good movie. As it stands, it's more than a watchable movie, but nothing else.

As a story, this film is absolutely amazing and breaks ground in terms of access to senior political figures. We watch the electoral fabric of a developing, troubled nation play out before our eyes as the relatively idealist, determined now-president, then-candidate Evo Morales lets us into his world, even down to his raquetball game and ratty Bolivian futbol jersey. Brilliant! Seen during the National Geographic "All Roads" film festival.

(es) wrote: An inspirational tale and touching story is what makes this film great. America Ferrera is at her best here with a serious, yet spunky role. A great ensemble supports Ferrera and George Lopez gets to play the helpful teacher, a wide step from his usual comedy roles.
(us) wrote: Awful. Awful awful awful. But anyone who's pledged a fraternity hasta love it just a little. I mean, if ever during a real hell week somewhere Acid Sid pops out of a toilet, I think the events depicted here are a fairly accurate portrayal of what would follow. Of the thousands of cheap slasher flicks to come out of the 80's, this one has merit. I can't justify that at all. Oh, well.

(gb) wrote: Good, old fashioned, happy story of a man who is a doctor for all the right reasons. A little corny at times as it has a fast paced love story. The train scene was hilarious as I still know men like this. Definitely a good watch if you love Cary Grant.
