The only thing I knew about this film when I picked it out, was that it had won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, so I had no expectations, just hopes. "Gigante" did not let me down.I loved the dark/dry humor that you catch glimpses of through its minimal dialogue, which keeps you guessing about how this quirky love story will unfold. Don't let the film's slow-pace fool you though... this story was like a puzzle I was dying to solve, so I payed close attention to the clues that get sprinkled throughout; I was never bored and the comical bombs that are dropped every now and again definitely keep you alert and entertained. I loved this film!

Borrowing bits from Enemy of the State, Hackers, The Net, Eagle Eye, and a slew of others, this film doesn't do any of them justice. At the end of its hour and a half run you're left with nothing but the bitter taste of anti-tech and anti-government propaganda. Even the denouement falls hilariously flat with a resolution you've already seen in a hundred other movies. This pile of crap would be found right at home at 3am on the Lifetime Channel with it's terrible early 90s dialogue and ill-researched jargon taken right from some producer's Minecraft-playing child, if it weren't for the grating dubstep soundtrack and generic tension building "professional" score accompanying the entire mess. Skip it and you'll have nothing to feel bad about.

What makes the film so remarkable is that all the characters, the heroine included, are flawed (if not doomed), and in the end it amounts to a quite bleak vision of the modest, perfectly reasonable ambitions of working-class people in a small town. Barbara Stanwyck is very, very good in her role, but Robert Ryan's tortured, sadistic film projectionist steals the show (and, for a while, Stanwyck).
(mx) wrote: It's a not so interesting story about aging football player Victor Mature deciding between retirement or continuing on to please his demanding wife, Lizabeth Scott. There's also the team secretary, Lucille Ball, who's in love with Mature. That being said, Ball is a very good counterpoint to Scott's icy beauty and the film is strikingly directed by Jacques Tourneur. Tourneur actually manages to make the gorgeous Scott seem even more glamorous than she normally seems. It's not a classic, but worth watching for fans of Tourneur, Scott or Ball (and I suppose Mature if you're a fan, which I've never been).
