Tim M (kr) wrote: A political sex comedy that Kerry Washington fans should like. "Sheeeeeeeit." Takes place in an alternate universe where a man can get five women pregnant a night and a cure for AIDS is possible. The message about whistle-blowing and truth trumping profits is poignant. Mackie, Harrelson, Belluci and Turturro are great. Too long and slow.
Mimi S (kr) wrote: Everything about this film is truly awful and just feels so cheap. Poor Josh Hartnett really hasn't had much success with films. It's not that he's a bad actor, it's just they he always ends up starring in films that end up being a disaster such as Pearl Harbour and the Black Dahlia. He really had the potential to be the next Leonardo DiCaprio. Anyhow 40 Days and 40 Nights is about a heartbroken guy called Matt (Hartnett) who has numerous one night stands in order to get over his ex girlfriend Nicole, but during these one night stands he finds himself unable to focus and misses Nicole. He confides in his brother who is a priest. With Lent coming up, Matt decides to abstain from sex for 40 days and 40 nights with the discouragement of his friends and co-workers who make bets on how long his pledge of celibacy will last. Matt finds himself falling for Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) and enjoys getting to know her without the pressure of jumping into bed. This film is so dumb and so sexist; Matt is heavily discouraged by those around him, especially his roomate Ryan (Paulo Constanzo) who believes what he is doing is stupid. 40 Days and 40 Nights brings up the whole double standards thing; its ok for women to abstain for sex for long periods of time, but if men abstain from sex it's seen as abnormal. I just kept thinking why is this such a big deal? I actually admire guys who don't go hopping into bed with a girl straight away and actually want to get to know a girl. In this day and age it's easier to get sex than a date, call me old fashioned. We live in a society obsessed with sex and this film epitomises that. It's sad really. For a film that tries to tackle society and men's obsession with sex, the film obsesses about lack of sex. This film really makes waiting a few dates for a sex into such a big deal! This film is badly acted, badly filmed and badly written. It's more like a soft porno meets low budget flick with pretty but unsuccessful actresses only getting roles as slutty girls. To be honest apart from Josh Hartnett I've never heard of the rest of these actors in the film. I found the whole storyline pathetic and stupid. This is a film that only drunken frat boys who feel pressurised by their mates to have sex with as many girls as possible, will relate to. You can tell that this is a low budget disaster. FYI the soundtrack sucks! I got so fed up of this film that I didn't even make it to the end. Grade: F

Cody C (it) wrote: Clive Barker has a real talent for coming up with shit that's confusing but that you can't take your eyes off. It's not a great movie, but at no point do you want to stop watching it, and there's great visceral things in it, fun practical effects, etc. The kind of movie that images of which will stick in your head forever, and the story is far secondary to that. I'm very impressed with something being watchable even though it's quite incoherent. That's a really tough line to ride and this movie rides it well, and that's what makes it a classic.
Rui M (jp) wrote: Watching this film is almost like watching Cannonbal Run II. Feels like a home movie; I know I know, it's low budget but Gone in 60 Seconds is a masterpiece compared to this.
Matthew S (ca) wrote: This is the kind of movie you watch on a lazy day with nothing else to do. At it's heart, it's a mildly entertaining adventure with some classic Harryhausen stop-motion animation. Overall, it's really pretty bad, from a poorly thought-out story to a lead actor would couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.
