Dwight M (ca) wrote: I thought this film was brillant. I love how the director took full advantage and manipulated and used the MiniDV format which was used to shoot the film this can be seen through the gliches and Etienne's usage of auto-focus. I stumbled upon this film while looking through used DVD's. It's a well done film. It's really crazy when you start to notice Etienne's infatuation for his teacher.

A disaster for all concerned. Worth a look; sensationalist British thriller proves criminal activity should best be left to criminals.

Joshua E (it) wrote: Not so good. Van Damme's character feels very tacked on at the last minute in this film. He also seems to have a love interest in the film purely to distract him in the final fight so that he can get hit in the face with a chain, get shot in the leg, fall off of the dock, and ultimately get pulled into a ships propeller. Very silly.

Lariste K (de) wrote: pseudo-classic film, features great costume and photography from the seventies era crew, instead of the slick, commercial-appeal look of 80's action and fantasy era pictures. As has been said before, film flirts with distinctly fascist overtones throughout - eugenics, the breeding of an illiterate warrior class, fundamentalist cults, quotes from Nietzsche on the power and dominance of strength. The film's great score and visual style aren't really matched by it's lead though, as Schwarzenegger is unable to bring much drama, pathos or depth to his role as an orphaned warrior child seeking revenge. Really, the most emotive sequences are created by the films soundtrack and stylized set pieces, and there's not much of a story arc to build the film into a legitimate "epic" ala Lawrence of Arabia. Oliver Stone who wrote for the movie envisaged a series of powerhouse action-fantasy films appearing every two-three years with Schwarzenegger as the lead, but the series was followed by a garbage sequel, additionally, the fan base ridiculed Arnold's dialogue and acting chops, giving him a Razzie or whatever it is for worst actor of 1982.
Tyler S (au) wrote: A bloody, violent, somewhat horrifying film about torture pretty much. It's pretty tough to watch at times. What makes the movie somewhat bothersome is the desperation you feel for the characters. If you feel for characters the movie has some influence. Just like Jaws made you not want to swim, Hostel made me not want to travel abroad. Not comparing the two just saying the Point is the same in the movie affected me which means it did it's job. All that being said a movie about people being butchered up and tortured is only good for one viewing in my opinion.
