Some set pieces work really well (a recurring, haunting and haunted blind girl particularly burns to the retina) as some inevitably fall flat (a librarian devoured by strangely pipecleaner-esque tarantulas - for absolutely ages) but the all-round atmosphere is uncomfortably gooey and visceral, added to by the sweaty bayou backdrop. Fulci favourite Catriona MacColl and nearly-Bond David Warbeck are attractive, effective leads and the ending - including a disturbing, utterly bleak vision of purgatory that was a clear anticident of Lars Von Trier's 'Antichrist' - is one of my all-time favourite closing gambits.
Martin D (gb) wrote: It,s a Movie for Him and her.Italian smutmeister Tinto Brass directs this erotic drama which offers this dubious assertion -- a couple that sleeps around ends up loving each other more. While scouting out apartments in London for her Venetian boyfriend, bubbly Carla (Yuliya Mayarchuk) rents an apartment that overlooks the Thames. She also gets jumped by hyper-horny real estate agent Moira (Francesca Nunzi), and the two shag, shag and shag again in increasingly perverse ways. When boyfriend Matteo (Jarno Berardi) shows up, the kinky hijinks really begin.

This delightful film just came out on DVD after being unavailable for so long and I got to watch it in widescreen for the first time (my VHS pan-and-scan copy was getting worn out). Newell serves up a great treat for the mind and the senses and the funny bone here. The contrasts of the characters and their separate inevitable fulfillments are a delight to experience and to see it all happen in such a beautiful setting is wonderful. (BTW - why they chose Newell to direct the fourth Harry Potter film is a still mystery to me - I've heard of mis-casting a film, but mis-directing?)
Pavandeep S (ca) wrote: One of the most brilliant opening scenes in a giallo genre. I mean, really cool and fascinating. I was wondering how they did that, considering the safety and all. The plot is complicated as hell and you sometimes wonder if the clues are really for real, but it was entertaining and when it came to the end, it was a theatrical tour-de-force to a sweet movie.
Reah L (ru) wrote: Aaliyah's last work didnt live up to the expectations of what really anyone had. Sad to know this was her last movie. Stuart does a better job of playing a seductive and feline-like Lestat than Tom, and that im thankful for. This movie was messy, with too many details left out, overly gothic and ill fitting outfits, and accents (bad ones at that) thrown where they werent needed. Marguerite Moreau's acting was unsatisfying and weak. one star is deserved, and its mostly because Stuart Townsend is just so damned cute.
