Sarah P (es) wrote: I'm sure to many people this would have a great religious value, but I thought it was really boring. I just watched the whole thing on fast forward and I don't think I missed anything. I enjoyed watching the monks slide down snowy hills...that's about it.

I'm sick and tired of films that sell "rawness" and that's all there is to it. So no, I didn't like it. I wasn't bored even though nothing much happened, but I really missed the point of this being 135 minutes.

Byron B (ag) wrote: What were they thinking!? This kind of camp is not my style at all! Vincent Price only speaks through voice over and overacts horribly with gestures to indicate what he means as if they were going to leave his character silent. The torture devices may have inspired the dangerous rigs employed in the Saw movies, but the combination of comedy, bad effects, and ridiculous frights just left me repulsed.
Anssi V (gb) wrote: There are some parts in this film that work and some that do not. The overall story is not bad, following one family's struggle to break away from the norm and to become independent entrepreneurs. Plus, for being nonprofessional first timers, the actors are surprisingly decent, managing to portray the anguish and feelings of betrayal and suffering that their characters are going through.Unfortunately the film isn't overly strong on the technical side. The film suffers from the classic pitfall of "show, don't tell", because most of the important scenes are narrated over and explained way too much in detail. In addition, the film just drags. I get that some film are supposed to be kind of slow, and in this case it would even be justified as the film tries to portray a fairly long stretch of time, but it doesn't remove the fact that some scenes just seem to go on forever. At some points I was even left pondering whether the film had just frozen altogether. Plus the sound design is terrible. Most of the background noise was either cacophonic, overly loud, unintelligible or all three at the same time.Still, it's not a bad film. You can see that the director had great passion for his subject and, as I said, the actors are surprisingly talented, which manages to save the movie from being unwatchable. So, in the end, it's average.
Eric H (jp) wrote: This is an excellent film by American master Frank Capra!.This film is truly one of the best comedies ever done. It has a great script, is beautifully directed and the performances of the actors are excellent. Above all, it is a treat to watch Cary Grant as Mortimer, every movement and gesture, every rolling of his eyes is superb.
House M (it) wrote: Really top work. A film that spans over 10 years to be finished telling the story of the boyhood of young average americans through the scope of this typical normal family. Very good acting. A must see, as their are not many movies like this one.
