Love of wife who stayed to help husband.Good movie recommend if you like history of wwii. Things in background you may not have even thought were happening.Though not truly historical, this probably happened.

Millo T (br) wrote: Good characters work combining past and present, history and social ideals, and the reactions of the different components of the film team (director, producer, actors, each with a different vision of life -idealistic, cinic, compromising) to the colonial problems which are described in the movie they are making, and also the water problems that are happening in Bolivia at the time they are making the movie. Not manicheist, finds character with a grey scale between the absolute white and black, and creates good combination among them. Also a good approach to the different points of view, conception of life and perspective to problems of the First and the Thirld World. The only bad point is that, and the end, it seems that the story doesnt close completely, but it is something that sometimes happens in life too. Also another point that you may like/dislike of the movie is that it seems sometimes more concentrated in the reactions of the Spanish citizens than on the problems of the indians themselves.

Robert I (it) wrote: I really kinda dug this film for the first 2/3. Good cast, the killer's identity kept me guessing until it was revealed... But then it plummets down big time! The killer is just pathetic and the reason is complete horse doo-doo. Many of the deaths at the end are very unfulfilling and forced. Terrible, terrible last third... But it was good until then... despite the stagey set and the blah directing I mean.
Chris C (de) wrote: Though technically this film is highly uneven--I give it five stars for purely personal reasons. I love the atmosphere, the clothes, the music, and Forrest is downright perfect as Dashiell Hammett! I know the movie is far from a masterpiece...but, dash it all (poor pun intended)..I love it!

Lee Anne W (jp) wrote: Can you believe this is the first Bergman movie I've ever seen? I don't know how I made it this long!Anyway, I really enjoyed it. It's always interesting to see something in its origins that is now a cliche, and this is chock full of dream symbolism, death imagery, etc. But it's still an entertaining story of an elderly widowed doctor on a road trip to receive an award. I can't say I'd sit and watch it if I came across it on cable on a boring Saturday afternoon, but it's not just "important," it's also not boring.
