Dave R (nl) wrote: a really good movie that missed being great by focusing too much on the white guy in this story and not on steven biko (denzel washington). it's hard to believe that apartheid in s. africa only ended in 1994! it's really sad to see what was going on and biko's story should've been the focus. nevertheless it's a powerful movie and worth watching.

Joseph B (de) wrote: Excellent portrayal of alcoholism, and addiction in general, and its impact on family life.

Sebastian L (ru) wrote: I liked it for most of the time, except for the storyline which seemed just to mercilessly straightforward to me and the final twist which came about just too unmotivated and thus shattered the credibility of the main character. But I liked the conversations between the detective and the prostitute and I particularly enjoyed observing the prostitute's reaction when she finds out that what she is actually being paid for is playing cards...

Ken C (nl) wrote: Tense, funny and action packed samurai adventure. Sanjuro definitely adds a different style and flare from the prequel, but the sliver-tongue performance by Toshiro Mifune and masterful cinematography by Akira Kurusawa remain the peak of this film.

Adam C (ru) wrote: Burt Lancaster is awesome. Was surprised at how gritty and real this felt for a prison film of the 1940s. Can't wait to see Dassin's other films.
