Trade of Innocents

In the back streets of a tourist town in present-day Southeast Asia, we find a filthy cinder block room; a bed with soiled sheets; a little girl waits for the next man. Alex (Dermot Mulroney), a human trafficking investigator, plays the role of her next customer as he negotiates with the pimp for the use of the child. Claire (Mira Sorvino), Alex's wife, is caught up in the flow of her new life in Southeast Asia and her role as a volunteer in an aftercare shelter for rescued girls where lives of local neighborhood girl's freedoms and dignity are threatened. Parallel story lines intertwine and unfold twists against the backdrop of the dangerous human trafficking world, in a story of struggle, life, hope and redemption in the "TRADE of INNOCENTS."

Andrew H (ca) wrote: One of the most awkward movies I have ever watched. This movie tries to be a romantic-comedy, but the plot and story can be applied to a horror movie. The main character is a creepy video store worker that starts stalking a customer who rents softcore porn. The whole movie is entirely uncomfortable to watch, because they try to make the viewer feel sad for the video store worker not being able to get this girl, but how can you when he is straight up stalking her? The whole film is just competely unrealistic, and the actors fail at succesfully playing their role, and making their characters seem real. Don't even waste your time with this movie, unless you actually get off on movies about creepy dudes stalking weird anti-social girls...

Brad G (ag) wrote: James Spader was just a somewhat skeevy 80s wannabe WallStreeter puttering about his yuppie world when wicked Rob Lowe saunters in with his seedy grifts and schemes and causes all kind of evilness. You know, now that I think of it, Rob Lowe is less of a ??bad influence?? and more an Evil Shit. Still, I love the second half of the film when the film noirish badness starts snowballing. And I was pleasantly surprised by where the Spader and actual real life friend Christian Clemenosn??s sibling relationship wind up?need more Clemenson/Spader team-ups! Curtis Hanson hasn??t quite reached the skill he later showed with LA Confidential or Wonder Boys, but this is a helluva lot better than The River Wild. Not VF.

Grifty G (au) wrote: Well crafted film (about to be released on Criterion) about the US ski team in the late 60's. Micheal Ritchie creates a very real film that is almost like watching a Maysles' documentary at times (who could have foreseen he would go on to make movies like Bad News Bears and Fletch). Redford plays a role he perfected in his career, like Roy Hobbs, a no-nonsense talent who just wants to do the job his way without any b.s.. Hackman also portrays a character he would become well known for, the determined coach. Great camerawork and a great ending.
