Lane B (de) wrote: The critics and audience were too harsh in their judgment of this film. Yes, it had problems -- really it was two movies in one -- but it was also witty in places, and Bill Murray was charming. FDR (Murray) and the King of England are two men with physical limitations (polio and stuttering respectively) who are running countries. A war is brewing and they must forge a friendship before the Nazis strike. The biggest issue is the choice of the narrator, FDR's mistress (Linney), which has nothing to do with the royal visit. It's a separate story.
Andres G (kr) wrote: Good script, good direction, good photography and good performances, specially from the children. This story about bullying and problematic families would have everythiing if it wouldn't be because it is too obvious and predictable. Almost, manipulative.I think I even liked it more because I'm starting to "understand" more and more the Scandinavian culture and its problems.

Anna B (de) wrote: Underrated, but not outrageously so. The script is pretty blah (what happened, exactly?), and the (fuckin') leads are weak (Heche doesn't bring much to an already thankless role, and then promptly disappears). But Mackenzie's camera is extraordinary (I'd recommend watching it just for that, even if most of the good stuff is in the first half), and it picks up in the middle as the two con artists butt heads and then engage in an at-first-cute-but-soon-turgid romance. Contains good within, but it's no masterpiece.

Bob V (gb) wrote: People who've been around me for a short while have undoubtedly heard me express my dislike for Brooke Shields. From dating Agassi, whining about her mum, nothing getting in between her and her Calvins, the atrocity that was Suddenly Susan, and putting me in a position where I almost had to be Team Tom despite Tom being a crazy douche. Despite this and to my own unease, she managed to be in two of my fave movies and one of my fave TV shows. In this one she's 12 and plays daughter of a New Orleans whore (awesome role by Sarandon). And she plays it well, the blossoming sexuality of a girl destined to be paid for is handled serenely, yet you can sense the discomfort in the scenes that bring her closer to the matrass mambo. Not an action filled movie, it moves slowly and beautifully to its ambiguous end, fine Brooke Shields, you justified your career early on, I guess you earned the right to stick around and get on my nerves for the decades after.
James M (us) wrote: Truly awful. This film has not aged well at all. Despite the film's title I do not feel I know much more about the man himself. Also although I'm sure it is authentic but the dialogue although mostly in English, regularly goes into Italian...without subtitles! Fine if you speak Italian, terrible if like me you don't.
