Action doesnt connect, characters are forgettable, story doesnt really go anywhere, and the effects for the most part are sub par at best. Hard to believe the company that released "No Tears for the Dead" has this in their lineup.

Ryan M (br) wrote: Perspective is an important tool in dealing with "Moolade". The majority of the men in the film have limited perspective, and the women can widen their own perspective only if they challenge social conformity. Also, I've never been to Africa so I can only look at this film through my westernised eyes that have been influenced by the way Africa's portrayed through the media. It's a masterful film that is quietly poignant, powerful and very humanist. Ousmane Sembene is considered the father of African Cinema, and this was only his 9th full length film (it was also his final film, made when he was 81), I may have to watch more of his films now.The film is set in a small village in Burkina Faso, where the practice of "purification" (female circumcision) has taken place for as long as the people there can remember. But 6 girls refuse to be cut, 4 of them seek refuge at Colle's place, who refused to let her daughter be cut because her oldest daughter died from it. When the rest of the village demand that she release the kids, she declares "Moolade", which gives protection to the 4 kids, meaning that noone can step into the house and take the children. However, in this society, men hold all of the power, but they are too stuck in their old ways to even think that "purification" might not be so good. Their solution? Burn all the women's radios, it's the outside influence that's polluting their minds of course *rolls eyes*.Ousmane Sembene's priorities may be with the women, but he successfully deconstructs the way the status quo will be reinforced by people who refuse to change, the conventions of this society and the globalisation of Africa. "Purification" has carried on in this place because it's a part of religion (although that is debated later on), and any woman who doesn't get cut will not be married, because society dictates that a man will not marry an uncut woman. Another strand in the story is the return of a young man from France, he is educated and dressed in a suit compared with everyone else who is dressed in african clothes. When he bumps into the "Mercenary", a man who sells food, batteries and all sorts to the people, he realises that the mercenary is ripping off the people because they don't know about globalisation. It's a film of restrained power, outraged that this practice still exists, that this society has not yet changed for equality and outraged that very few people are prepared to challenge it. It's beautifully shot with strong acting and a solid screenplay. Sembene's direction is careful and measured, his characters may not have a great deal of perspective on the situation, but he's wise enough to give anyone who watches it some perspective, and a great film to go with it.

Rangan R (nl) wrote: To learn what happened on that particular evening! It is not great, but still a good film. Starred in an important role and directed by Tim Blake Nelson. I think he also wrote it decently that remind us similar classics. A multi-layered narrative, where everyone has connections or meets at one stage of the story. It sets in one fine evening followed by a mysterious tragedy. Then the story moves back in time for days to introduce all the characters and their intentions in the life. Different families dealing the different issues, but they all lead to that particular evening where it somewhere links them in and bring a fitting end with a twist. So when the film nears the final segment, the curious among us rises. The common mistake we make while predicting the end is once again certain when the final push successfully takes us by a surprise. I am not saying it is a masterstroke, but comparing with the rest of the film, it was good. An independent drama film, except some sexual and drug references, it can be watched by the adults and matured teens, but the pace might trouble you in some parts with slowing a bit. Actors were awesome. Since it is a multi-starrer, everyone had small screenspace, but excelled in that. The disappointment is Kristen Stewart, if you are going to expect more from her role. So the film lacks the star value. Having a good story, but not having the marketable stars made the film to sink deep bottom without a trace. Yep, as for now it needs more viewers, despite whatever result it produces. Other than that this film surely not bad as it was tagged. I will definitely recommend it.7/10
