(de) wrote: For the most part, the obsessives of Wordplay are exactly who you'd picture, with the exception of the celebrity puzzlers, but there is much more than expected in the subculture of competitive crossword. Focusing on the New York Times puzzle, and beginning with a thorough breakdown of how the feature comes together, the documentary reveals how much effort, detail and playfulness go into these daily grids. Highlighted players vary enough that, for the most part, they are remembered upon return, and the celebrities provide an excellent commentary on the pleasures of crossword (especially Bill Clinton and the surprisingly combative Jon Stewart ). The national competition of the second half is a satisfying escalation of the subject, but lacks a certain suspense typically inherent to championships. Although absent a clear narrative drive, Word Play is an entertaining and insightful portrayal of an entire world hidden between letters, lines and spaces.

(de) wrote: You really only need to make it as far as the dope opening credit sequence, before determining you've made the right choice for your evening movie. The title character here may be Pam Grier's greatest role. And that's saying something. All the performances in this are tight, though. The casting of Kathryn Loder as "Miss Katherine" is as close to genius as casting gets. And Antonio Fargas, who plays Foxy's brother, Link, is simply one of the realest dudes ever to be in a flick. Hey, Sid Haig even shows up for a brief reunion with Pam!A memorable soundtrack and score, by Willie Hutch. And ultimately, Writer/Director Jack Hill shows why he's the genre master. Flawless structuring, dynamite dialogue, smooth cinematography. Even some great intentional humor. (Check the scene where Foxy's man is scolded for trying to get it on with her in the hospital.)Not sold yet? Let's try this:There is a sequence in which Foxy fights her way out of a "dyke bar," using barstools and wall art.

(us) wrote: Schwarzenegger mixes the successful Commando with the movie Aliens. Schwarzenegger brings an action movie plot twist with Dutch (Arnold) and his special forces team fighting a new adversary from outer space. All the muscle, guns, alpha male action mixed with a camouflaged Predator. Directed at an adrenaline pace where the special ops suddenly realize they are the hunted. Corny acting with machismo humor, grunts, screams, creates a horror/action classic. 3 and an half stars.
