stefano l (us) wrote: Mah. The story wasn't that interesting, and also the director tried to focalize the attention of the watcher on some particulars that would like to be artistic, but that are just unintersting and totally useless to the filming and to wath's happening. The only part that partially saves the movie, is Javier Bardem's character, so rude that it was impossible to do it worst. And Penelope Cruz, of course.

Sgt C (de) wrote: (22%)If almost all slasher flicks are B-movies, then this is without doubt a C-movie. And this lets the audience know strait away that the quality is going to be as rock-bottom as the tiny budget will allow with super cheapo 80's synth rock from the very start. Which is at least nice of the makers to be so open about the movie's limitations so early on. The plot itself manages to be both stick thin and broken at the same time, as the reunion at the slashing end of the "story" takes place at the now derelict school. Why travel miles to have a party there? It's run-down, dirty, dark, and very likely dangerous. How stupid are these people? But then again one of the party goers gets blood on her after some guy's gut explodes for reasons not really clear (although it is the best part of the film) so she strips off and takes a bath. Have a guess if she lives or dies because of it. This really isn't worth a look except for maybe big slasher movie fans who can see past 27 year old men and women playing high school students, terrible lighting, bad writing, and awful performances.

David L (gb) wrote: Heavy Traffic is another one of those nasty 1970s films - it a pointless and stupid look at absolutely nothing with awful characters, vulgar to the point of pornographic approach, pointless live-action sequences and lack of any characterization, substance or purpose whatsoever making Bakshi probably the most overrated animation director of all time.

Scott S (br) wrote: Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956) -- [6.5] -- Paul Newman headlines this Robert Wise biopic about real-life boxing champ Rocky Graziano. Ernest Lehman's smart, well-paced script sees Rocky through several youthful indiscretions that threaten to ruin him just as the lightweight championship comes within reach. Though he had appeared in one other film prior, this is the movie that launched Paul Newman to stardom, and it's no wonder why -- he's magnetic. (James Dean was originally slated to star, but was killed prior to the start of production.) The supporting players are competent, but Oscar-winner Eileen Heckart ('Butterflies Are Free') stands out as Rocky's mom. The set design and cinematography won Academy Awards, and the climactic fight -- with cross-cut reactions of Rocky's friends, family, and community -- creates an genuine feeling of pride and victory that wouldn't be rivaled for twenty years... Not until another boxer by the same name would grace the silver screen and make film history all over again.

Edgar C (ca) wrote: A longstanding monument of neo-realism made by an aspiring Italian communist that openly criticized neoliberalism in the world's economy. Labor exploitation has always been a politically important issue. La Terra Trema: Episodio del Mare is a controversial and extraordinary masterpiece, even visually, with the powerful presence of the sea as an inert character, as a prophet of upcoming misfortunes. Nature is not the one to blame, or destiny, for that matter; it's the economic structure. 100/100

Jules H (es) wrote: Open Season has plenty of heart warming moments and brisk, healthy animation. The film, however, does nothing to set it apart from the other Looney Tunes-esque works it blatently rips off resulting in wild unoriginality and pre mature, but funny, gags. All in all, it can still be a good film if those specific flaws can be ignored, which is not always an easy task.

Baurushan J (ru) wrote: Based on the true story of writer and professor Tobias Wolff, The story is about Caroline played by Ellen Barkin who wants to find a decent guy and provide a better home for her son Tobias played by Leonardo DiCaprio. She then meets Dwight played by Robert De Niro who she settles with later. Toby, however, feels differently after spending a few months with Dwight and his children and away from Caroline. The boy's stepfather-to-be seems to want to mold Toby into a better person, but to do so he emotionally, verbally, and physically abuses the kid. The marriage proceeds, and soon Caroline, too, recognizes Dwight's need to dominate everyone around him. She sticks with it, though, convinced it's the best thing for her son, and several years of dysfunction ensue. Emotionally dramatic and well casted, This Boy's Life gets a 8.6/10.
