It's free from cliche, interesting to look at, and with a score that is haunting - who can forget the beautiful song 'Calling You'? This truly quirky movie is so touching, hilarious and original. The cinematography is incredible (reminiscent of Robby Muller) and director Percy Adlon keeps things cinematic and incredibly compelling. It's just a minor gem but one that's well worth discovering again and again. The cast of character are wildly varied and at its heart is a story of friendship. It definitely has a bit of a Coens touch with some of Lynch thrown in. The film is clearly a labor of love and one of the best comedic gems of the 80's.

Filius S (mx) wrote: See the movie that everyone is tripping over themselves to hate, even though it's actually pretty decent, because something something Asimov's I, Robot with Jayden Smith Sr. is a better actor. Automata is the story of desperado who has settled into a comfortable life as a robot technicator in the robot future. The city is in the desert, and robots aren't allowed to repair themselves, until some humans find a couple that are. That's bad news because the companies in charge of robots can't just lose money or something, so they try to bury the story. But Zorro is like "what?" and hunts for the truth, eventually meeting some bots who are going to make their own city without blackjack or hookers. The movie is pretty good at showing you how stupid people are, and how robots are better, but also does a pretty good job of setting up a cyber-punk-stopian setting, and touches on a lot of the dumb shit that happens with technology today. It's not philosophically mind-blowing like other robot movies like Tranformers: Rise of the Advertisement, but as a film, it's definitely got quite a bit going for it. TL;DR - 8/10Pretty sweet robot movie, but if you don't like future stuff and Zorro (which I do) it's actually 7/10. If you're into robot movies that tell you what brand of shoes to wear, this movie will be 1/10 Converses, and you will want to watch I, Robot instead.
Matthew S (us) wrote: Not the movie that Paramount promoted. This is an emotionally intelligent film about an aging mother and middle-aged son. One of the best American films I've seen to take an honest, but sensitive glance into the relationship of mothers and sons. This is not a typical Hollywood bathroom humor movie nor is it a typical Streisand or Rogen movie. Even the synopsis is off on this site. Excellent performances and a quietly powerful film that will make you chuckle a few times but more importantly sparks ideas about parent to child and child to parent relationships. This film is grounded in reality. I strongly disagree with the majority of film critics who I normally tend to agree with. It felt like they went to a different movie. See it.
Dillinger P (br) wrote: This adrenaline fuelled action flick has quite a lot in the thrills department to offer but its repetative nature ends up blurring it into a complex and needless mess. The basic premise see's a big day for the American president in spain where he is about to give a speach on global terror and is gunned down. We see this atrocity occur from many of the characters angles in the film. The basic premise is sound enough but the constant back tracking becomes an annoyance very quickly, the events span over half an hour and would have probably made a watchable mini series but as a film it just doesnt have enough weight in each characters department. The cast are sound enough, there is plenty of ranging talent on show, from Sigourney Weavers OB director to Forest Whitakers tourist with a video camera but with only an hour and a half, thankfully, of running time and the layout you dont get enough time to really grow towards the characters. Had this movie been done as one big fuelled action, suspence film taken from all their angles and made 20 minutes longer, we could have had something better here. However rehashing the same event 8 times from different perspectives only serves the viewer cause to guess the big reveal pretty quickly. Oh and the shock twist, with such an inclusion of nonsense just destroys the work one of the actors attempts to do, not that his role isnt paper thin already. The action and chase sequences are dealt with well and can be paced well but seeing the same thing from different angles for an hour and a half just drags after a while. It's a big typical mess by the end, with the good old american victory. With some decent talent and blood pumping sequences, this film isnt a complete failure but had it have been structured better and had a bit more room to breathe, this could have been something more enjoyable.
