Wikipedia quotes: "mean-spirited film did not have one single likable character." Which to me means the film is in a prime spot for a resurgence given how cynical American tastes have become, desiring such darker stories. One of the best moments is Joe Mantegna helping the main character fight back. Horror films rarely have scenes of such gratification. Yes, it's fighting back by doing more harm, but that's how the country's tastes are currently swinging. The ending hits all the right bittersweet notes too.
