(mx) wrote: AMAZING! watched it for the first time in more than 10 years. was wondering if it would hold up to how much I used to love it or if it would have old movie qualities. not only did it hold up, it exceeded. I picked up on so much more than when I was a kid and a less experienced movie watcher. such an awesome idea for a story that may have seemed ridiculous at the time but not any more with today's technology. Just a great idea that was taken in all the right places. the characters were awesome. the acting was intense, especially by cage. the movie was smart. great directing and action sequences. superb musical score. there was a little bit of unrealistic and some over the top but I don't mind. this is probably the best action flick of the pre-CGI era (about 7 viewings)
(kr) wrote: A gritty, hard-bitten, noir styled crime drama with some basic and effective sci-fi themes working to a great effect. An original idea that works extremely well. This film presents us with an excellent script and great performances by it's main cast, who are in top form. Of course it has it's flaws, but if it was perfect we probably wouldn't enjoy it the same. This is an excellent piece of sci-fi, that's sadly often overlooked.
(fr) wrote: One of those so awful it's worth popping in from time to time. Travolta was dating the actress who plays his mother while they were filiming, the Brady Bunch dad plays his pops, Buzz Aldrin makes a cameo as himself. The mouth filter on Tod's space suit is hilarious, so obviously just a piece of plastic with holes poked in it.

(br) wrote: Melvin Van Peebles is the MAN. I share the sentiment of my colleagues and agree that this one of the most underrated films EVER.quick synopsis: An extremely bigotted white man find out the hard (and somewhat humorous) way what it's like being a black man, firsthand!the tagline is "The Uppity Movie". don't get much better than that, y'all.I just bought another copy of it, I dig it so much.

(de) wrote: I See A Dark Stranger (1945)Sidney Gilliat, Wolfgang Wilhelm and Frank Launder made a great post-war/spy movie that also pokes a little fun at the Irish.A head-strong young Irish woman Bridie Quilty (Deborah Kerr), growing up hearing the stories of the Irish Republican Army, leaves town to join the IRA herself. She meets up with a Nazi spy, Miller (Raymond Huntley) who has her doing reconnaissance work to break a fellow spy out of prison, who has valuable plans of the D Day invasion. She also needs to occupy the time of a British soldier, David Bynes (Trevor Howard) who is suspected of being military intelligence. Lt. Bynes is actually in town doing his thesis about Cromwell, which pushes Bridie's Anti-British buttons to the max. Somehow, they are attracted to each other through all of their travels.
(es) wrote: 2 stars for cinematography - the main character Jane is utterly unlikeable, smug, and childish.
(br) wrote: Exceptional film. Kristen is spectacular in this role. I find the movies she does are not only funny, but do have some really sincere, meaningful moments taught through that humour, much like Woody Allen films. There aren't as many comedies that can succeed like this. This stayed more on the serious side than comedic anyway, but I just loved this film.
(br) wrote: This is not one of Clint Eastwood's better directorial installments. The first half of the movie was actually pretty good, but it lost steam and focus as it went on. It also seemed to feel way too long. Has a few good moments, but not good enough for me to recommend putting up with the rest of the movie for.
(jp) wrote: I had a friend that wanted to watch this - actually, it was pretty comical in a bad sort of way
(de) wrote: Whoo boy! that was ridiculous. Totally my type of movie, in every way, but it somehow missed the mark, unfortunately. Watching all the making of was a blast though.
