The subject of the film is the 1972 outbreak of smallpox in Yugoslavia, more specifically the events related to the epidemic and the subsequent quarantine at Belgrade's General Hospital. The film follows the journey of a Kosovar pilgrim on his way back to Belgrade from the Middle East. While at a bazaar, the pilgrim buys a flute from a man who is visibly ill. Upon his return to Belgrade, the pilgrim starts to show signs of illness and is transported to the city's General Hospital. His disease is initially misdiagnosed and the smallpox virus starts spreading through the hospital very quickly. Once the disease is correctly identified, the authorities attempt to subdue the outbreak by declaring martial law, enforcing quarantine and enlisting the help of the World Health Organization. Eventually, these measures prove to be effective to subdue the epidemic.

This is the most efficient entry in a while but these sort of affairs may never shoot to 5 star approval status by unanimity and watching some of these cardboard cutouts who we perceive to be people die in grisly ways should it?

Very well written, with some nice performances. Roth is superb as Martin Sr.'s coke-head girlfriend. Drags a little towards the middle but still somehow manages to hold your interest.

Chelsea K (br) wrote: I strongly believe that anything with Humphrey Bogart in it, is worth watching. The cast is pretty much the same as it was in The Maltese Falcon, and I have absolutely no problem with that - They work well together, and made yet another great movie.

Unfortunately, the viewing experience is not of the so-bad-it's-good variety, the sort of variety which includes Blue Chips and Draft Day?it's just really, really bad.
