In 1671, with war brewing with Holland, a penniless prince invites Louis XIV to three days of festivities at a chateau in Chantilly. The prince wants a commission as a general, so the extravagances are to impress the king. In charge of all is the steward, Vatel, a man of honor, talent, and low birth. The prince is craven in his longing for stature: no task is too menial or dishonorable for him to give Vatel. While Vatel tries to sustain dignity, he finds himself attracted to Anne de Montausier, the king's newest mistress. In Vatel, she finds someone who's authentic, living out his principles within the casual cruelties of court politics. Can the two of them escape unscathed?

In the end, it performed it's job well enough, but It's stupidity did also annoy me (I really hope our national security isn't as incompetent as it is in this movie). Performances are (for the most part) good, but the plot is cliched and annoyingly predictable (a fact which it even admits too and references). Young kids might enjoy it, but really there's so many better kids movies out there.

Great example of letting a relationship blossom throughout the movie, slowly adding pieces until it becomes something very special. Also great acting performances. It's just a tad over sentimental for me, but it more or less had me in the moment and I felt like crying at the end.

However, Spike did try to have some deeper message about the protagonist playing an innocent game that drags her down to a place she that is far from where she wants to be, but it gets lost because it isn't well conveyed nor incorporated. I'd advise passing on this for a better Spike Lee Joint.

The revenge plot may have turned some viewers off but I found it thrilling and a nice change of pace for Bond. Sadly, Dalton wasn't a big hit with viewers but they use him effectively here. He's not very dynamic (not so good with the romance) he's much better suited to the darker and edgier material. This would foreshadow the later Daniel Craig Bond films. The epic semi-truck chase is remarkable and a satisfying climactic set piece - one of the best action sequences in the franchise. (Interesting to note, the chase was apparently cursed by a Demonic presence during the filming.) The two Bond women are extremely attractive. The script is very tight, the violence very brutal and the major characters are compelling. Poor Felix. I believe, this is the first Bond film to be entirely original, not based on any Fleming novel. All around, an excellent film. Great water-skiing scene as well!

Allot of the (i'd imagine) beautiful, cinemascoped, visual compositions are lost.The heart of the film though is Bob Hoskins and the legendary Peter O'Toole, who both give this unflinching look into an embarrassing British defeat a genuine depth. Its obvious parallels with the Vietnam war ad to its power.

Stephen C (kr) wrote: The prince of darkness Nick Cave is not everyone's cup of tea.I for one had strong reservations about this film going into watching it but unlike most music docs this really does hit the spot.The film concentrates on a day in the life of Cave as he travels around his adopted city of Brighton focusing on his meeting with work colleagues interspersed with clips of his band the Bad Seeds recording a new album.The film is part real part fiction and its good that the film manages to pull this off as the danger would have been a massive self indulgence..During the course of the film we also get cameos from Kylie Minogue and Ray Winstone who discuss music and mortality with Cave and we also see Cave admit his fallings as we trawl through his personal archive.if you haven't sampled the works of Nick Cave then this film could act as a fine primer for one of music's true originals.

Being stupid doesn't make something funny, there should really be a joke attached to something stupid; like having Yoda be called Yogurt, and having Chewbacca be named Barf is just trying to make people laugh based on how ridiculous it is rather than it actually being funny. Despite that, the movie being extremely boring is my main issue with it. Give it a watch on if you are either a huge fan of Star Wars, or you can forgive the film for being very hit or miss with its gags.
