Jens S (fr) wrote: Buddy comedy by the numbers, entertaining but forgettable, especially when you care little about what's going on on the screen and you're ultimately wondering what all the fuzz was all about. Only the protagonists' chemistry makes this somewhat watchable.

Donald W (es) wrote: Although Liz Taylor just passed away and she got an Oscar for this movie, it's still a boring soap opera of a movie. You know it's a good Liz Taylor movie when she gets to be seen in a slip somewhere in the movie. This movie takes care of that in the opening sequence. After she puts her clothes back on it goes downhill. The story is about the demise of a high class call girl. The character she plays makes a living being paid by fashion designers to wear their latest fashions out on the town and getting herself photographed by the paparazzi with rich and powerful men. It was based on a real woman who drowned in 1931 but it's almost prophetic with today's beautiful women who are famous just for being rich and living a wild party lifestyle. Liz Taylor almost became this character in real life. Since the movie is set in 1960 it loses the depression/prohibition era background. She only did the movie to get out of her MGM contract and go to work on the Movie Cleopatra. The acting is melodramatic. The acting in a TV soap opera of the day was better. The movie was popular only because Eddie Fisher was in it and the Liz Taylor/Eddie Fisher/Debbie Reynolds scandal was in the news.

Andrea P (jp) wrote: the movie is close to perfection. The synopsis is close to idiocy. It was really necessary to tell everybody how the movie ends?

Alex V (br) wrote: Terrible! We've seen this story so many times. Nice cinematography. Beautiful Joshua Close gets one star.

Tony P (kr) wrote: Typical Ken Loach film that has all the usual attributes seen from his work over the years.1. A grimy northern England working class location. Check. Barnsley, Yorkshire.2. A cast littered with UK stars from television. Check. Lynne Perrie (Ivy Tildsley off Coronation Street in the 1970s and 80s, Harry Cross off Brookside and the late ex wrestler Brian Glover in a great role as the school PE teacher.3. A rather left wing view of working class Britain. Although the film was made in 1969 and is very dated now. Thirty forty years or more. The film uses its cinematography and costume to add to the grimy feeling of the town. There are some memorable scenes mainly centred in the local school. In particular the Man Utd v Spurs match enacted on the school playing field and the caning of an innocent kid in the headmasters office. If tha wants a reet gud neet instead o watchint rubbish on telly get thi sen watchint this.
