Hakuchu no Torima" is the portrayal of a violent rapist as seen through the recollections of his wife and one of his victims. As the film starts, Eisuke (Kei Sato) encounters Shino (Saeda Kawaguchi), who works as a maid in a house. She is a former coworker from a failed collective farm, whose life he once saved -- only to rape her. Soon, Eisuke's criminal pattern of rapes and murders emerges as he goes on assaulting women (Shino being the witness of one of them, as Eisuke tries to violate her employer). When cooperating with the police on making a description of the rapist, Shino withholds her crucial knowledge of his identity. She prefers writing letters to Eisuke's dutiful wife, Matsuko, a schoolteacher (Akiko Koyama -- Mrs Oshima), in order to expose his true nature and perhaps induce her into turning Eisuke over to the police.

Alex S (gb) wrote: Pretty sure the whole point of the movie was to show the audience that we cannot always trust the main character ... and I like that.
Kristin R (ru) wrote: A great look at the music of that era, with fantastic performances from all the cast. However, at the end, I was left wondering what the actual point of the movie had been. There was no story as such, it was almost like a movie of the day in the life of someone. Could have been so much better.

Plenty of memorably funny moments, some great one-liners and excellent performances by the entire cast, with Goldie Hawn doing a stand-out job and Nipsey Russell making the most of his relatively small role as the beleaguered high school principal who desperately wants gridiron glory for his school's team. Veteran director Michael Ritchie definitely knows how to perk up a formula story and make it seem lively and new again, even if we do see the feel-good finale coming a mile away.

Some of the barely there cameos could've honestly been excised altogether without really missing out on anything, but overall it was a fun little watch and will probably be one of those movies I find myself getting fished into on cable, just because it's a fun ride..Plus it's amusing to see all these guys try to out-quirk one another for an entire film, so give that a look to see who's the corniest, as they all have their silly moments.Give it a rental.
