(ag) wrote: Horrible. Normally love Jason Stratham fliks as good escapism, but this was soft porn with only enough action to be able to call it an action film.

(jp) wrote: Secretary is directed by Steve Shainberg, and it stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader in a erotic romance about an emotionally sensitive girl that got out of a hospital ward, and she is looking for a job. So Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) found a job and works with E. Edward Grey (James Spader) as a secretary, and when she find out that he's a sexually dominant man, she was fine with it and they partake in a BDSM relationship. I remember that before I watched Fifty Shades of Grey, I've heard of Secretary and would honestly watch that than Fifty Shades of Grey, which also has the BDSM part in it. So after watching that movie, I was looking more forward to Secretary as it was terrible. Now I finally got to see it, and it is so much better that I finally see why BDSM can be normal for some people, even if I still don't agree with it. I've never seen a more committed performance from Maggie Gyllenhaal in any other film that I've seen her in, and she's completely amazing in this movie. James Spader is great in it, and they work together really well with great chemistry that is quite different then what I'm used to in romance films. The story is well done, although the ending can be not as fleshed out as I could've been, but it's not much of a problem as the ending was good, just needed to be improved a bit. When it gets to the BDSM, it has a good balance of having laughs about it, but also taking it seriously. The characters are developed very well, and I really cared about their relationship, even if it's a bit of an extreme one. Secretary is a really great film that is a BDSM relationship done right, and is nothing like Fifty Shades of Grey in terms of its awfulness.

I just had to see for myself. The story itself is intriguing, but it?s based off of a popular manga of the same name. A lot of manga is much better in book or anime form than live action. The story goes something like this: a young girl (Tsukiko) is seeing a psychologist/hypnotherapist to try and recover some of her lost memory as she developed a form of amnesia after an ?accident? a few years prior. Under hypnosis, she mentions the name ?Tomie.? At the same time, a detective is trying to track down this ?Tomie? ? apparently a demon who can re-spawn from any of her severed body parts. A group of murders centered around Tsukiko?s friends and acquaintances, repressed memories, an evil but beautiful demon, and a supernatural mystery?.all these elements should come together to make this film a decent horror film. You would think. Unfortunately, the film falls flat on too many levels to be very likeable. I at least wasn?t staring at my watch the whole time, but it could have been so much better. The acting was very blas, as if the actors didn?t really care about giving the characters any depth. This in turn makes the characters boring. The only spookiness comes across with the high contrast lighting, lots of dark shadows pooling behind the characters, but that is artistically the only likeable aspect of the movie. And it?s been done before. The bloody horror scenes are not very bloody, nor very scary. The plot crawls along predictably. The relationships between the characters are not believable. For the first of the movie, we are not shown Tomie?s face, to give her an air of mystery (actually, I didn?t really care too much what she looked like). When we do see Tomie?s face, we are nonplussed. There is nothing overly sinister or overly beautiful about her, as we are led to believe. The final climax is not very exciting, and I just watched it for the sake of watching it. Overall the movie was just boring, and there isn?t much more to say about it. I can?t even make the review interesting!!! J I say ?skip it!? I am amazed that there are even sequels to this. The idea is a good one, but the movie is a bad one.
