The film starts with Mandela being released from a 27-year prison sentence and is immediately elected as the first black president of South Africa which brings forth racial tensions and other issues which he immediately seeks to repair. Morgan Freeman is PERFECTLY cast as Mandela, completely embodying his look and persona throughout, portraying him earnestly as a flawed man; even if his accent is a bit inconsistent. Matt Damon is also stellar, playing Francois Pienaar, captain of the national rugby team, the Springboks, donning a buffer physique and prosthetic nose to look the part; he also nails the accent quite impressively. The film is directed by Clint Eastwood, who takes a reserved approach and delivers a solid, inspiring politics/sports drama that doesn't over-stay its welcome or rely on too much sappiness; even if it is a bit oscar bait-y. The film does play fast and loose with the facts, as most biopics do, but it's the central performance from Freeman, that is the glue that holds much of this film together. It's an exceptionally well-made, if unmemorable, drama that is enjoyable on pretty much every level with two great performances; but don't expect it to blow your mind.
