Downey Jr's narration is witty and his chemistry with Kilmer is a treat to watch. The irony and self awareness of the film allows viewers to rationalize what can be a convoluted plot at times.
Michaelina D (mx) wrote: Wow, this was dark. I'm still partially in shock at the ending... Definitely not your average teen movie. The characters are so much more than I expected at the beginning. The normal kids turn out to be the most messed up, and vice versa, completely defying expectations. Great character development, great acting, great camera work. It has a very morose mood to it. Absolutely perfect.

Tom Cruise shows off not only his acting abilities but the fact he can be an action star more than any role he has had previous, the rest of the cast is solid with a good mix of veteran actors and relative newcomers to such a genre, the score is excellent, I like the action scenes, plenty of style thanks to De Palma and although the script is relatively barebones and the plot is somewhat predictable as it progresses it is all entertaining nonetheless.
