In Goodbye South Goodbye, Hou not merely passively observes the events, but also makes sure to involve the viewer through the use of mobile, at times even subjective, camera. Although aesthetically a step forward, Hou still seems preoccupied with time-bound stages of experience, carefully mapping out the differences between now and then. Hou regular Jack Kao, who also co-wrote the script, is in great form here as big brother with increasingly less authority.

That's as it should be, since this is a minor masterpiece. Like most of Siegel's films, it's not a ferociously ambitious film, but it's an incredibly well-oiled genre machine ... and Eastwood is the perfect actor to star in it. His performance as Harry Callahan is so iconic that it's difficult to see how different it is from what came before it.
