Whitey

The second movie version, now in color, of Flemish (heimat-)author Ernest Claes' classical novel, titled after the nickname (Dutch 'the White', referring to a blond male) of the main character. The smart but naughty farmhands son's eternal mischief, pranks and disobedience drive his elders (especially teachers, family and father's grumpy employer, a rich farmer, but also neighbors and even the kind curate whose liturgical server he is) and classmates to despair in a time when a boy's punishment was still inevitable, swift and often severe; thus when his mother catches him skinny dipping she takes all his clothes home, forcing him to a long walk of shame, dreading dad's wrath all the way. This version also stresses the story's social and Flamingant aspects.

Scott J (kr) wrote: This is a movie that takes on racism without dehumanizing the racist. In the end it wasn't hate, resentment or a self-righteous PC-ism that won they day, but tolerance, acceptance, good will and humor in the face of bigotry. I loved it

Paul D (es) wrote: Slightly obscure with its psychological mixed with gore storyline, but does hold the attention.

Luciano G (es) wrote: It has good story, and it's quite well made I think... o..f course there are also little cameos by Ozzy and Gene Simmons, but they don't very much contribute to the film "success", although they are good in their small roles...if you like 80's movies, you'll like this!

Alex W (ag) wrote: Had a lot of build up to this and was underwhelmed. This film must be on the public radar because of Al Pacinos stardom at the time and the controversial subject matter. Now days it just feels average.

Iraklis P (es) wrote: From an atmospherical and visual representation of the games, this movie blows it out of the park, from the ashen fog,the nurses, the babies and the legendary Pyramid Head,it shows the best of the Silent Hills demons and does them credit. As someone who has understood the games quiet well, this movie's plot twist will be quiet easy to detect, but it still takes some liberties from the game this movie adapts. The plot kept me wondering who will live, who will die,why this version of Silent Hill exists as every Silent Hill exists for a reason. While the theme and logic is taken from the games,it still manages to warp around the ideas without straight out copying them. It does however have some flaws. (The various demons being symbolism for rape and other acts that don't fit the protagonist still being present. Cybil deciding to stay behind because the writers didn't know how to kill her. Rose deciding not to climb the easily climbable rumble, and rather risking her own life. The bugs not managing to kill Rose and Cybil despite them not having a weapon and somehow surviving the night.) However ignoring those minor holes in the plot, and understanding that the movie will play by its own rules and not the rules of the games. The lore of Alessa and ESPECIALLY the satisfying ending will win your heart, especially if you haven't played the games and realize the logic behind Silent Hill at the very end. I think this movie gets too much flack because not many people understand the plot, some of the blame goes for the writers for adding a nonsensical cliffhanger on a movie that didn't need a sequel and (by the quality of the second movie) shouldn't have the sequel.I don't think however, that the plot is hard to understand, the characters' motivation is bad,or that the cilffhanger takes enough out of it to make this a bad movie,as far as i know the only REALLY bad thing in the movie is that, while it will make you uncomfortable and make you shrivel at some of the disgusting and downright painful looking scenes,it isn't really scary.
