Of course eventually I was able to watch the entire thing, but even then that portion I first viewed had an impact, albeit on a slightly disturbing level.

(fr) wrote: A neo-noir film with all the traits of the classic ones. All the archetypal characters are here but still the screenplay is nothing less than brilliant. As detective J.J. Gittes slowly unveils the mystery we stand mesmerised by great filmmaking and performances. Intense pessimism is the main characteristic here. After all, troubled times gave birth to the genre in the first place, troubled times were needed for its revival.
(ag) wrote: This is a strange film not for it's subject matter, nor narrative/ directorial approaches, but because, while every sequence is quite good by itself, the sum of these parts never seems to gel into a very good movie. The delivery of much of the dialogue is often stilted, but I took that as more of a consequence of the "world" of the movie.

I've also enjoyed the work of Channing Tatum (including Step Up, Stop-Loss, Coach Carter etc) - so I thought the pairing of these two would be an excellent combination.I just felt this movie was a bit clumsy. Tatum and Howard were solid, but not outstanding and I wouldn't say they were at their best here. The fight scenes were executed quite well, but I thought the "venues" were a bit unbelievable at times. Maybe this stuff really happens in NYC (and America in general) but if it does, I don't think it would happen as it is portrayed in this movie.I thought we also could have seen Tatum (Shawn MacArthur in the film) "build up" to the fights a bit more. As it was shown in the movie, he was simply plucked off the street based on one incident alone but I would have liked Tatum to show his wares a bit more to really demonstrate his fighting skills. Again, just a bit clumsy and not well thought through by the writers in my opinion. This is not a bad movie (just above "average"), but it just wasn't as good as I had hoped. I'd still say give it a watch but don't expect miracles.

Definitely one of my favorites from this era of film, and something I need to revisit more oftern.Gabriel Byrne plays a magnificent bastard in this one and it's just a joy to behold.Recommended.
(it) wrote: It was ok. A good idea but It's pretty stupid that The German Empire spontaneously implodes at the end becasue they can't secure an Alliance with America. Who cares about America? In this version of history Germany is all of Europe plus what the British Empire was. That's well over half the world's Land Mass being German. Pretty sure they're going to be fine without America. For God's sake Germany's doing fine with just Germany in real life!
