(ca) wrote: Disappointing effort considering the writer/director's track record. A poorly developed kernel of a potentially interesting sci-fi concept bogged down by an uninteresting action thriller framework, a low-chemistry outlaw couple in a trite on the run subplot and dull retro-futuristic setting. Further burdened by evidence of heavy-handed editing that leaves behind too many inconsistencies and lacunae. Only saving grace is some striking digital photography.

This is amongst Robert Downey, Jr's best comedy performances as a businessman visited by the spirits of 4 people who died the very moment he was born and now need his help to right the wrongs in their lives before they can pass on into the afterlife. It's a really sweet, feelgood comic fantasy and I may have to hunt down a copy to keep.

It brings back the memories of my childhood spent in the mountains, listening to my grandma's ghost stories before bed. And I love this film.

One change that I like is it expanded on the early scenes between Ada and Inman so it made you understand more why they have this longing for each other during the war. The whole movie feels very bleak, but in a good way - there is a sense of dread throughout. One thing I did not like is the added scene where the neighbor's family is killed. It's a bit gruesome and doesn't really add anything to the story. Jude Law is pretty good in this, he has this innocent quality about him that captures Inman pretty well. I can't believe Renee Zellweger won an Oscar for this though!
