(us) wrote: Good performances by actors. Though predictable, the players carry the plot. Satisfying though somewhat unprobable ending. Possible spoilers --> I don't thing someone with agoraphobia could snap out of it that quickly. The relationship between the protagonist and the detective should have been more developed.
(nl) wrote: In "Turn the River," Kailey Sullivan(Famke Janssen, doing a fine Sandra Bullock impression) is a pool player who has been forbidden from seeing her 10-year old son Gulley(Jaymie Dornan) since he was born. However, that does not stop her from contacting him via a dead letter drop at a pool hall or meeting him in Central Park when she is in New York City. Lately, she has noticed Gulley's broken arm, ascribing this to his father(Matt Ross) and hatches a plot to run away with her son. The poorly directed "Turn the River" wastes a good cast in a failed attempt to capture the atmosphere of smoke-filled pool halls by going for a melodramatic premise that ends on a false note. I know that Gulley's father is quite possibly abusive but Kailey is not the solution, even though the movie tries in vain to make her sympathetic.(Since when do criminal lowlifes do anything without getting paid beforehand?) Even if she had come up with a way that is not half-baked to get her son, her parenting skills leave something to be desired since she is pure impulse, uncontrollably twitching when a game is not imminent.(Gulley probably finds her coolness and lack of responsibility refreshing.) And even with a full explanation at the end, I still do not exactly buy the story as to how Kailey and Gulley met.

(ca) wrote: This is a really well shot Aussie drama, with incredible chracters & a nice stry! Unfortunately like most dramas, it tends to be a little too radical & annoying especially when it follows the strange quest of claire to 'help' the family of the victim found in the river by her husband & his friends! I've seen similar films in the past & all of them suffer from the same syndrome of guilt! Do people really feel guilty because they found a body? They are not the murderers & still it seems it changes their path & look on life! This is a good film but somehow it's the sort of film i don't really understand, how can you not warn the autorities when you discover a murder? To fish with your mates next to the corpse for the entire day & have a good day? Well it sure is a little weird but as the man say, you weren't there, you don't know what you would have done so shut up & move on! Somehow he's right, we always have a great idea of 'we' would have done in such situations, but somehow you just don't know until your are face to face with it! I would have prefer the film to explore this side a bit more & for claire to trully understand that nstead of bearing this fake guilt towards the victim, because t's none of her business after all! I enjoyed the fact the men come to apoligize to the family , that was the least they could do. Overall it's a film that shows a complicated conflict of morality & fairness but somehow it lacks a bit of guts & courage to stick the finger where it trully hurts! I would have prefered something more sharp.
(es) wrote: Similarly to Gigante (another movie from Uruguay), "less is more" approach works extremely well here. Not sure why it's labeled as comedy, to me it seemed more of a subtly humorous low-key drama. The story relies on the cast's wonderfully understated performances, and the simplicity is misleading: in the end it's left up to the viewer to draw conclusions, and this movie may stay in your head for days after you watch it.

(ca) wrote: I didn't really like this film when I was younger, the material was to advanced for to me understand and care about. Seeing it again after Williams death, it makes me wonder if this was his favorite role and meant the most to him? It's still not a great movie but the message it conveys is more important.
(jp) wrote: Major League may have been predictable in certain ways, but the comedy within Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, and Corbin Bernsen is absolutely strong. It's the kind of movie that has left a huge mark on the art of sports movies, comedy movies, and the art of baseball itself. It's fantastic.
(mx) wrote: Not very funny. Spielberg might be great at comedic moments in dramas but his straight comedic instincts are very childish.

(us) wrote: t's got everything it needs to be great, Suspense, mystery, and confusion to make a great Sherlock Holmes mystery, ill admit that at the beginning Holmes's disguise had me fooled, I did not know it was him until Watson figured him out. Holmes finally meets his match in this film we find out that he had been outsmarted more than once which is completely against everything that we know about Holmes. I also quite liked the cipher which I recognized from The adventure of the dancing men, I like how they did not solve it right away, it took time even for Holmes to figure out however the solution seemed a bit obvious. Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon is great fun to watch with some mysterious parts but there are also some very obvious parts that Holmes would have easily solved.
