A woman and her seven children live on a farm in Southern France. In spite of the hard work and the mediocre accommodation, their life would be a happy one, but for one person: the owner of the farm, an egotistic and authoritarian individual who is also the lover of the woman and the father of all her children. The farmer handles them as his property, uses them as cheap labour to work in the fields, and denies them the right to leave the farm. It is only the love of the woman for her children that allows them to endure their situation; but even for her, disenchantment has set in. – IMDb

Alberto G (ag) wrote: Solid acting by the whole cast, and intriguing from start to finish. Would have wanted more of the courtroom drama treatment that movies like A Civil Action or Erin Brockovich got, but telling the story while focusing on the impact of the case on the flawed characters made for good storytelling.
Phil B (ca) wrote: A film so bad it makes medicine sick. If the actors received a wage for this carbuncle of a moving picture they should return it, hang their heads in shame and consider a pious life secreted in a convent or monastery away from public view. A special skill of the apparition was its ability to remove and refit the front number plate to the VW Golf which is seen most frequently during this glorious technicolour turd-fest.

Martin T (mx) wrote: One of Altman's lesser-known films, about a pair of compulsive gamblers. Awash with his signature improvisational acting and people talking all over each other, it's also got kind of a Cassavetes fly-on-the-wall feel to it. But I didn't think it had much spark to it, only a few moments really stand out and the rest feels like treading water. However, the killer ending is unexpected and fulfulling. Elliot Gould exudes charisma as usual, George Segal is a bit stiff.
Veronique K (it) wrote: "blackbeard the pirate" is roul walsh's realistic interpretation of authetic piracy whirling around the abyss among the ocean, the ferocious avarice of men. robert newton's blackbeard is obnoxious, schemefully sordid, and also beastly gruesome. the bushy blackbeard of his looks as if it's full of crawling louses hiden in between that parallels his snaky backstabbing character which is utterly no good. he doublecrosses everyone for his own interests and he slaughters every possible man who might jeopardize his personal interest. he's lecherous, vulgar and mostly incorrigibly ruthless. the only decent character maynard who is the lover of beautiful linda darnell is a timidly weak character who strives for merely survival and the companionship of his beloved lady who could inspire a bit of chivalry in him. maynard is no hero but an clever little mouse who always tries to manage to escape the devilish palm of blackbeard, but not a charming nor glorious character. "blackbeard the pirate" could be by far the most realistic flick upon piracy with a group of scum-alike mobs and one despicable gunsel butchering each other. except linda darnel's striking beauty, there's absolutely no glamour or dreamy beautification of idealism in "blackbeard the pirate", even darnel's character is a oportunistic female thief who once intends to devour the treasure all as her own possession.

Turn The River is not a bad movie, but it is really hard to watch sometimes and seems to run a little long, and then I hated the ending, it just didn't make sense, you will do anything to protect your child, but then you run from cops and get shot at with your son at your side, is just seems dumb, and did she live, die, teach the car to fly and move to canada, it would have been nice to know, oh, if that last option did happen then I totally would have given this 5 stars easily.
