Patrick L (nl) wrote: Joe, Lisa, Joe N., Kyle and Stephen - how about you all go out and get a "real job" since you are not suited to reviewing movies with even a modicum of objectivity? Alexis Bledel, to me, is a great "new find", given that I have not watched "Gilmore Girls" (and likely won't, even if on dvd), and she shines as a fresh blue-eyed graduate who has great hopes and dreams and is only about to find out about how things work in the real world - yes, sometimes the popular people in school are the popular ones at work though even they get knocked down a bit if they get too high on themselves. This is the first film in a while in which I've seen Michael Keaton (as a lovable but hard to take dad) and Carol Burnett (as a rather hard to take matriarch) and although the film does have its missteps (Ryden getting involved with the guy whose cat is killed by her dad) it is largely a welcome and original movie.Essentially Ryden graduates, fails to really notice and care that her friend loves her (I can relate to the reality of that scenario), she fails to get work at her most wanted business (losing the position to her "nemesis" who then loses it due to her obnoxiousness and Ryden is then "tapped" for the position). Ultimately Ryden realizes that she really wants to be with her friend (who had told her that she didn't belong in his life) and in that heartwarming scenario - her love and humility win him over in the end and that I think is a beautiful, if imperfect, message for us all. Some of the dialogue may ring hollow or be clunky in the mouths of the actors - Keaton's advice and compliment to Ryden and some of the things that Burnett says but the whole of this film is the sum of its good and best parts with anything else in it. 10/10

Julian E (de) wrote: Something fresh from Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer director Takashi Miike. This is an enjoyable comedic art house drama with little to none of his trademark gore/disturbing scenes.

Susan C (gb) wrote: Begins in humour, but ends with much sadness, and involving a haunted cosmetic! The spirit of beautiful courtesan Fleur cannot understand why the lover with whom she made a suicide pact is not with her in the afterlife. She enlists the help of a bemused young couple in the tragic search for her love.

Robert D (jp) wrote: A fine example of the film noir, with Ethel Barrymore in the cast. The protagonist is tortured by the fate of his father, who was hanged for murder. YouTube has a good print of it.

Brian K (fr) wrote: Not as steamy as the title would have you believe. Skip to the end to see Quentin Tarantino's cameo and his hilarious take on Top Gun.
