Ruhan R (nl) wrote: If this film wasn't based on real events my rating would probably be 2 stars. When films are based on true stories it gives them a realistic quality that just brings them to life. Unfortunately, a real-life base isn't enough to make a movie great, it has to be executed right. Kevin Asch was working with an interesting story and a gifted cast, but this story wasn't presented in it's full potential. It might have been because Asch wanted to preserve the true story as best as possible, but the plot was rather mundane for a story based on international drug smuggling. It was interesting to see how the lower class Hasidic Jews were drawn into the drug game by the temptation of money, and how Sam's lifestyle estranged him from his Jewish heritage, but a grittier presentation would have helped deliver a more powerful message. Eisenberg and Bartha both performed exceptionally well, immersing themselves in their characters as best as they could. The cast did their job all right, but Asch's directing and Antonio Macia's lacking script just lacked luster.

Ashley H (jp) wrote: Venus is a funny film. It is about the life for a pair of veteran actors that gets turned upside down after they meet a brash teenager. Peter O'Toole and Leslie Phillips give excellent performances. The script is well written. Roger Michell did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching this motion picture because of the humor and romance. Venus is a must see.

David B (au) wrote: I generally like movies like this: weird, unsettling and Lovecraftian. This one had its moments, and I liked the slow, menacing style of the film. There just wasn't a good enough story for me to rate this highly. What's more, the filmmakers didn't even make an attempt to reveal the Great One on screen. The best we get is a sex-crazed Tori Spelling. Frightening, indeed, but in a bad way (or is it a good way?)

Brett B (us) wrote: You know what? This is a much better film than the silly title would indicate. William Marshall brings legitimate pathos and gravitas to his work, and his is a performance that would be top-flight in a straight drama, much less a schlocky horror flick. The script (aside from an unfortunately goofy prologue sequence) is sharp and has a healthy sense of humor, and while the film does pretty much meander its way to the conclusion at the end the third act, it's a very solid production up to that point.
