Eric L (nl) wrote: Wow. Necromentia was actually an extremely pleasent surprise. I almost passed this one up when I saw it at my local video store for rent. I am very glad I didn't. This is obviously a movie of fantasy, but the way it was put together and the excellent creature/gore effects are so top notch, you feel as if this was a real life possibility. Let me take a moment to talk about the creatures... they are amazing. They are all expertly designed, equal parts horrifying and amazing. Most of the creatures in this film were definitely inspired by the likes of Clive Barker, H.P. Lovecraft, and Wes Craven. And in this film, those influences really show, and these filmakers took some of the best inspirations from these other classic horror mavens. Necromentia wasn't the best movie I have ever seen, but for what the movie was trying to do (scare the hell out of you and make you remember this film for weeks to come after seeing it) it definitely pulls it off very well with a surprisingly good cast and script. A must see for anyone who calls themselves a horror movie fan.

Brandon W (kr) wrote: One Hour Photo is the directorial and writer debut of Mark Romanek, and it stars Robin Williams in a thriller film about a lonely guy who is a photo technician and is nice to the customers. There's always that one family that come to him for photos, and he's happy to see them, that is until we see that he might be a little obsessed with them. When my sister and I saw it for the first time a few years ago, we actually loved it and were really creeped out about the film. So when I got free HBO for the weekend on DirecTV and saw that One Hour Photo was on it, I figured why not, and watch it again, which still holds up as my first opinion, while adding in more layers that I find unexpected. This is mostly a one man show kind of ordeal that whether or not the film will be a success depending on the main character's performance, and luckily the late Robin Williams did an outstanding job of playing a lonely guy that gets obsessive. The supporting cast are also really good, and the main character's development is so effectively creepy, but also kind of sad that I actually felt sorry for him. The direction and writing by Mark Romanek is well done that that directing music videos really paid off for him, like the hallway scene for example that felt unsettling as it's just pointing the camera at Robin Williams being creepy, and it kept lingering on him for quite a while, especially with a very creepy score by Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. There were some parts that I had no idea where it was going, and there were some scenes that were rightfully up for interpretation. One Hour Photo is a fantastic thriller that is very underrated in my opinion and needs to be seen more.

Lee M (ca) wrote: Homage, memory and unabashed zaniness infect "Funny Bones." It's a tour de force for filmmaker Peter Chelsom, who chronicles a complex saga of vaudeville and shtick, pathos and absurdity. One can only quarrel with the density of the effort, which stuffs far too much story and sideshow into its modest frame.

David G (mx) wrote: Not as much fun as the '84 original (Chuck spends more time gazing through bamboo prison bars and getting roughed up than he does karate chopping bitches) but you'll still have a good time watching it, especially towards the end where Chuck becomes his usual unstoppable one man army. Characters are a particular highlight with many larger than life personalities - I especially liked Soon-Tek Oh's over the top tyrannical camp warden and Steven Williams' POW-turned-collaborator - a type of character you hardly ever see in a 'Nam flick.

Michael K (de) wrote: Tremors is directed by S.S Wilson and Brent Maddock. It stars Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward and Finn Carter. It is a very cheesy but enjoyable monster movie. It is set in a small desert town in America. The town is attacked by strange snake like monsters that can sense people from their movement. The monsters are incredibly well done, the practical effects are very realistic and make the movie feel like this could actually happen. The movie has some very tense moments, which is good but they are eventually ruined by a bad script. The movie doesn't know what quite to do, it doesn't know if it should be serious or not. And that's where the faults lie. It should really be a funny movie, but it isn't. And that's not say it doesn't have funny moments, because it does. It just has too few of them. It is much too serious for what it is. But the performances are very good and the concept is also very good, and it is one of the better low-budget monster movies. 2.5/4
