Christmas Eve, 1937, Piatra Neamt, Romania: Dominic Matei, a 70-year-old professor, contemplates suicide. On April 24th 1938, Easter Sunday, he takes a train to Bucharest to kill himself, but suddenly he's struck by lightning. Played in a magical, mythical forest, the setting raises some potentially interesting fantasy ideas, but they're trampled over in a rush to get to the crazy (and badly done) gore scenes. The version I saw was dubbed, which made it even worse. Formulaic splatterpunk with low ambitions.

I liked just about all of the characters and performances. The plot was a bit weak, but everything else made up for it.

Some of Lumet's quick cuts become weary on the eye and the increasingly heavy subject and bitterness of the main character eventually take their toll on the viewer. Quincy Jones's music was also not the most appropriate choice which is most evident in the ending. It's interesting to note that the now famous "Soul Bossa Nova" can be heard in one of the scenes.

Although I gave this movie a star more than the sequels review there is no need to go crazy over this movie. The plot has an extra element that " Bingo" didn't and that was common sense. I could actually see the reality of every character's motives and actions. I never understood why each character wanted these motives and actions but they were real nonetheless.Annette's hair still bothered me. The "Head-Rat-Guy"( his name escapes me) was hardly the leader of a motorcycle gang. He couldn't even command the attention of the actors so how could he entertain the audience. I tried to skip the parts of the movie with him but there was important information pertaining to the other characters during those scenes. Frankie was acting very much like the pubescent boy that he was. And the movie was not really worth my time.

Andrew L (br) wrote: The epic of all superhero films. Think 'Heat' but with a vigilante dressed as a bat & a mass-murdering clown. With a city pushed to the edge by Ledger's brilliant portrayal as a mass-murdering terrorist, the action is always going to be non-stop. The strengths of the original are carried over including great effects, set-pieces, script, story structure, cast & acting. The only downside being that they killed off Two-Face (Eckhart) at the end (ending should have been more like 'The Long Halloween'). Otherwise it is definately the best summer blockbuster since I don't know how long.

Following Haggis' trend of multiple story lines at once, this movie has three main stories, Liam Neeson's story, Adrian Brody's story, and James Franco's story. The acting in this movie is fantastic. Liam Neeson shows he can still pull of a dramatic role. James Franco reaches a well realized dramatic level while not over acting. Mila Kunis is amazing and brings real emotion to her character who can't seem to catch a break. Olivia wilde is the weakest of the cast but is still good. And Adrian Brody is very good in the movie. The writing in this movie is also very good. Paul haggis can be a genius writer. he's not quite there in this movie but he is definitley a scholar. His directing is also very good. And I think the ending to this movie is one of the best in years. It says a lot about how we deal with grief, failure, acceptance, and confusion all in a few minutes. It is beautiful and haunting in such a way that my mouth was hanging down to my knees. However, this is a flawed movie, Adrian Brody's story line seems to drag on and I really didn't care about any of it. It was uninteresting and didn't seem to fit until the very end of the movie. there are also several parts if this movie that are a little to slow for its own good. I dont mind slow paced but this one pushed it a little bit for me. and the child and some of the other smaller characters in this movie are not good actors. they are in fact terrible. but with little screen time it isn't too bad. Overall I really enjoyed this well acted well written movie, although some parts dragged on and one of the stories was very bland.

Low-budget, but completely convincing as the realism seeps through in Fuller's always acerbic dialogue, Fixed Bayonets might not be his best film but it certainly has that quality of being "simple and hard-hitting" that he always espoused. Gene Evans reprises yet another lead role as the gruff Sergeant Rock, straddling a Korean War battlefield with the only politics that matter once you're on the ground facing down the enemy guns: the politics of survival. The ending was a bit abrupt but seeing as Fuller gets his point across after the first half an hour or so I'll give the man his due.
